Originally self-released in 1983 in small numbers, Positive Force's first album sat in the post-disco, pre-boogie sweet spot where AOR glass met jazz-funk hunkiness. The US outfit of guitarist/producer Steve Russell, saxophonist Bill Liston, keyboardist Larry Kester and vocalist Denise Vallinnever broke nationally, but it changed hands in West Coast session circles and collectors. Vallin, primarily a studio singer and vocal arranger, gives the material its lift on 'You Told Me You Loved Me' and 'Put It In The Groove', closer to blue-eyed soul and radio funk than boogie. The 2019 P-Vine reissue (Groove-Diggers series) helped reframe it for crate diggers alongside Tatsuro Yamashita and Archie James Cavanaugh, restoring a private-press curio to circulation.
