The original Poppies trio formed at Jim Hill High School with Dorothy Moore, Rosemary Taylor, and Patsy McClune. After organizing, still in high school, they became good enough to work for Billy Sherrill in Nashville doing background work. After high school, Moore elected to go to Jackson State University, but still pursued her musical activities.

The Jackson State experience didn't last long -- Moore quit after her freshman semester to take advantage of an opportunity for the Poppies to record for Epic Records, with Sherrill producing. "Lullaby of Love," a Sherrill/Larry Butler composition, was a small regional hit in 1966. Taking advantage of their golden chance, the Poppies assembled a road show, the Mid-South Review, which toured the south with a Sam & Dave-type duo and a male group (possibly the Carvettes since all the acts were Jackson natives).

Epic released a second single, "He's Got Real Love" b/w "He's Ready," in June 1966, three months after the first, but it didn't do as well. Yet the Poppies didn't notice, they were too busy barnstorming. Epic dropped the Poppies' Lullaby of Love LP during the tour; it consisted of songs by Sherrill, Butler, Bob McCree, and brothers Clinton and Edward Thomas. All ten songs take only 23 minutes to play. Sherrill, a masterful songwriter and producer with countless hits to his credit, couldn't work his magic with the Poppies. A third single, "Do It With Soul" (released late in 1966), was new material not featured on the LP, but its success was, again, of the local/regional variety and the group soon disbanded..

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small, neat, circular cutout hole in one of the corners

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams (nothing significant)

-        Cover has four tiny, almost invisible, pinholes (or staple holes) in one corner. These tiny holes are NOT cutout holes.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
