Description
THE STORY OF THIS PARTICULAR VINYL
I know this is a GENUINE EARLY PRESSING of this ground breaking LP because ...... I BOUGHT IT having seen The Beatles in concert at the Winter Gardens, Weston-Super-Mare.
It was bought from the H Seeley record shop, Hill Road, Clevedon, North Somerset having ordered it on 24 June 1963, just 7 weeks after the release of the album. The order is confirmed from the 'Hillman 24/6/63' pencilled marking on top left corner of rear of sleeve. The only other marking is on the original Emitex inner sleeve where the record number 'PCS 3042' is marked on the top right corner. For some reason the record shop always kept the sleeve and record separate prior to sale. It would have been ordered because the shop carried relatively few pop records and certainly none of the new stereo versions. I ordered the stereo version because my parents had just bought a 'state of the art' Pye radiogram!
I am happy to confirm any of this in writing to the successful purchaser if this provenance is thought to be of value.
I have done the best I can with the photos. Nearer the end of the auction I am prepared to try to provide any particular further photo via email for the serious bidder. I recognise that this is a RARE item and therefore should command a reasonable sum. As such I would want the successful bidder to be confident about their purchase.
THE RECORD
This believed to one of the rarest and most sought after LPs in the history of the Beatles. This 'Please Please Me' LP, No PCS 3024, is believed a 1st pressing on the 'Gold on Black' Parlophone STEREO label.
This has:-
· the small "33 1/3" description to left side of label
· "(YEX.94)" on side 1 and "(YEX.95)" on side 2 and "YEX 94-1" and "YEX 95-1" stamped on the run out on sides 1 and 2 respectively
· mother stampers side 1 at 3 o'clock "R" and at 9 o’clock "1" and on side 2 at 3 o'clock "G" and 9 o'clock "1" believed to indicate first pressing on the GOLD and BLACK label
· rare early "M Z T" tax code stamped around spindle hole on side 1 (see photo)
· "Dick James Music" accreditations on both sides
· "The Parlophone Co Ltd" credit on the edge of the label
· no "recording first published 1963" text on label which is believed to be rare
Condition
The LABEL on both sides is clean with no blistering, bubbling or peeling. There are no spider marks. The Gold lettering is sharp, bright and all fully readable.
The VINYL has a good shine. There are some scuff/hairline scratch marks and two deeper scratches, one short (about 3mm length) on the run out on Side 2 which has no effect on the play and the other on Side 1, Track 4 which does not cause any loss of play. There does not seem to be any discernable spindle wear - it sits firmly on the deck. The record is very flat with no signs of warp.
The record plays very well with NO jumps, NO repeats, and NO discernable clicks. All tracks play with clarity and have NO loss of audio sound! There is a little low pop/crackle within the play but mostly heard in the dead play areas and quieter parts of the play, but nothing that overpowers the audio in anyway.
THE SLEEVE
This has:-
· the "Photo: McBean" accreditation text close to the opening edge of front
· Large "stereo" on top right of front
· the original first issue "Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd." printer accreditation on rear
· Only "Please Please Me - The Beatles" on spine of sleeve
As per the Story above, "Hillman 24/6/63" pencilled in top left corner of rear of sleeve
Condition
The sleeve is in good condition with no tears and with the front high gloss still intact. There is a very small split to the bottom opening edge. There is one slight mark just below the "LES" of The Beatles. There is a little wear to the bottom flipback but all still solid. The corners have more heavy wear but all the text and material is still there - just lifting a little (see photos). The spine is near perfect and totally readable. The white of the rear of the sleeve is a little discoloured but is clean and there is no marking from sticky tapes of any sought - a common problem of old sleeves!
THE EMITEX INNER SLEEVE
This is the original much rarer (heavy duty) "Emitex" clear windowed poly lined inner sleeve.
Condition
Clean accept for the record number written in the top right corner (see Story above). There are no tears or splits. Only slightly discoloured with all text clear and readable.
SO..
This is a completely original (having been in the family since purchase) 1963 GOLD ON BLACK STEREO LABELLED FIRST PRESSING of this first Beatles LP WITH the original heavy duty inner Emitex sleeve.
The LP is in good condition MARED ONLY WITH ONE OR TWO MINOR SURFACE MARKS as described above.
With the DICK JAMES CREDITS ON BOTH SIDES and with the 1G/1R STAMPS it is believed that this means it is amongst the VERY EARLIEST POSSIBLE STEREO 1ST PRESSING !
I have tried to be as fair and accurate with my description as possible and as such, I do think this is FANTASTIC item to grace any collection and deserves to go to a good home!
