Label Conditions: Both in stunning condition: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with any spindle marks very few, fine and faint. This immaculate original record appears hardly played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: This is an original first pressing and it’s rare, make no mistake. The price guide valuation on this album as an original are insanely low, this record sold in very small numbers and only later did it get noticed as it includes three Pink Floyd songs unavailable elsewhere. By then, the record has been repressed and the cover changed. Only the originals have laminated fronts and three rear flipbacks, as this one does (please see close-up of the back to show corner flipback detail). Repressings had a standard matt cover and were flat-backed, these are far easier to find, the originals being rare and elusive and now highly sort-after by Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead fans. Not only is this one of the rarest albums to include Pink Floyd, it’s never easy to find in top conditions. This copy is little short of immaculate, the record could almost pass for new and has beautiful sound from beginning to end. The cover is gorgeous and has aged little. A wonderful piece of music history for the 70s decade and for Pink Floyd fans in particular, this is a priceless piece.

Brief Info: ‘Zabriskie Point’ is a 1970 film by Michelangelo Antonioni, it was not received well by the reviewers of the day and it sunk without trace. Time has been kinder now, and reappraised more favourably. I am not a film reviewer and have not even seen this one before. The music included on the album is superb, and on that I am far more interested. It includes three important songs by the early Pink Floyd. The final song ‘Come in Number 51, Your Time is Up’, is an alternative take on ‘Carefuly With That Axe Eugene’ with even more manic screams – this is ‘Ummagumma’ era Floyd at their most experimental. Other material is varied with some great songs by Garcia and his Grateful Dead, also featured are the US version of Kaleidoscope amongst some interesting others. A fantastic rare original album that was as popular as the movie at the time of release, few sold or are seen with the laminated, flipbacked cover. This is one time has largely over-looked, as did I guess the original owner. The record could almost pass for new and the cover is little short. The sound is very clean and wear-free and this does have some quiet passages. This is truly a copy for the Floyd connoisseur and I can hardly imagine finding this vintage record better – it is the first original I have had to offer for at least three to four years. If this classic is on your wants list, do not lose this one.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and the merest whisker of fully Mint(-). A single format with the original laminated front. This protection wraps around the closed edges on to three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Lamination & Front: The front looks fantastic with very shiny, fresh and ultra clear laminate. It has a fairly mild rim dull at the top seen under angled light, but invisible with normal viewing. All is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters and the graphic retains the colour intensity of a new cover. No indentations and any of the tiny few surface creases are fine and very light indeed. The right edge sees the laminate end short of full width, the white exposed strip is pure white and ungrubbied. An absolute gem for the discerning cover collector who could hardly fail to be thrilled with the rare cover in such gorgeous condition.

Cover Back: The back is also in wonderful condition and lacking the usual grubbiness or discolouration seen on many like this. No creasing or ringwear and the unprotected main panel is unrubbed and retains an attractive shade of white, not far off what it would have been like over 40 years ago. The flipbacks are undamaged and all firmly adhered with no lifts or repairs. Barely even a hint of any end burring, the ends are very clean too with no grime-line formation. Just two fine surface hairline creases only but these critical flipbacks are unyellowed and look supremely neat, as does the cover in general. Truthfully, I can hardly imagine finding this better.

Top Edge: Totally unworn, fully laminated and smooth to the fingertip, dead straight too.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Very clean and sharp with barely any hint of wear. Devoid of thickening or burring and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Very impressive again: solid, mainly very straight with any compression slight. The ends are pinched in manufacture with just a tiny rub to the bottom end. This near minuscule blemish the largest on the entire cover which reitterates just how impressive this whole sleeve is. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate (please see spine close-ups).

Corners: All four retain even better than excellent to near mint shape and definition with barely any traces of noteworthy wear at all.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all-round example of this rare original format early 70’s cover, one that will prove beyond difficult to find better. This most elusive of Pink Floyd related covers will please most-all collectors and even the connoisseurs needing it.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: a plain white solid unlined inner that is little short of as-made. Any discolour to the adhesive on the seams is very light and faint. Uncreased, no splits or repairs, even the shaped and recessed top opening is crisp and totally immaculate. All this reitterates just how little the record has been removed, handled or played because these fragile old inners rarely show up like this either.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): and even, my highest grading for a played record does not do this beauty full justice. This record is truly stunning, jaw-drop gorgeous and looks pressed yesterday. Only the labels, matrixes and cover details will tell you it’s 42-years-old. A supreme visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence, reitterated by equally impressive sound. Visually a sublime record that should please all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This incredibly well preserved record plays up to it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds registered little, gentle and very infrequent and this is a record with some quiet passages. I also remind, I play all my records on a very revealing system. No pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, and not all MGM records are, and that is the truth. This ticks all the positive boxes and will prove near impossible to find better for looks or sound. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very little, barely even run-in in vinyl terms, and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to match let alone find better and can be unreservedly recommended – this does not show up often as an original – do not lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
