ONEADAYRECORDS – Simply Delivering Quality Music to the World.

Postage: UK £4.75. Europe (including Russia) £12.50. Rest of World £16.50. ALL signed for in quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes.

PLEASE NOTE: Overseas packets that go through the customs system, can take up to 4 to 6 weeks to process and deliver, this IS normal. For Russia, this can take even longer and is out of my control, so please be patient.

ALSO: I now apply the Ebay ‘4-day’ rule for non-payment. I try to keep my P&P prices as low as possible even yet another Royal Mail price hike, I will never compromise on solid, safe packing that is invariably a little heavier.

Artist or Band: PINK FLOYD

Album Title: Wish You Were Here.

Producer(s): Pink Floyd.

TRACK LIST:

Side 1: a) Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts 1–5; b) Welcome to the Machine.

Side 2: a) Have a Cigar; b) Wish You Were Here; c) Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts 6–9.

Label/Format: Harvest - customised format.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few small, very light and faint spindle marks that hardly even show.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Cat Number: SHVL 814.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. One of the heavier ones of these I have held and this above average.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: It would be foolish say this album is even scarce, and this one does not have the black wrapping on the cover. But this is a very clean and hardly played early copy. What I consider above all else is the pressing quality and this one failed to disappoint like so many others I have heard in the past. In fact this record gave a beautiful account of itself with very little unwanted at all – that a massive achievement for a record that was mass-produced in vast numbers to simply meet the demand of pre-orders and certain expectation it would sell well. Heavier pressed than most with early matrixes, a very lightly aged cover – that too difficult – a superb deep recessed, wide opening inner sleeve, serrated post card – and last, but not least, the original owner retained the large shrinkwrap sticker in superb condition. So this a very impressive example for looks and sound – one that can be played and enjoyed, and not waiting for pressing noises, loud and constant crackle, pops and clicks. A copy that does the stunning production very high justice. Such examples have always been elusive and the majority heavily played. This one barely even run-in in vinyl terms and a superb copy.

Original Year of Release: 1975

Matrix Nos: SHVL 814 A-1 / SHVL 814 B-5 [B-3 matrixes are recognised as the very first, but I have heard few examples to better this B-5 for clean sound]

Mothers / Stampers: 4 MOA / 3 RDO [these may appear high, but remember, this record was pressing in massive numbers]

Musicians: David Gilmour – vocals, guitars, lap steel guitar, EMS Synthi AKS, keyboards, tape effects; 6 & 12 strings acoustic guitar; Roger Waters – vocals, bass guitar, guitar, VCS3, tape effects; Nick Mason – drums, percussion, tape effects; Richard Wright – keyboards, VCS3, clavinet, background vocals. Guests: Dick Parry – saxophone; Roy Harper – vocal. Backing vocals: Venetta Fields and Carlena Williams.

Brief Info: Few rock fans will not know this album well. Consistently high in all all-time great lists whether compiled by critics or the record-buying public, this album sold in vast numbers but fewer remain in fine overall conditions or play well and have all the original pieces. It’s success and huge demand is, I feel sure, why this record has so many problems. Pressed in vast numbers and most-all on thin vinyl (even the first-made, this one is heavier than most), quality-control was probably not high on the agenda, units in shops was the order-of-the-day, hence so many copies failed to impress for clean sound. This hardly played copy plays superbly with very little unwanted, and that very unusual. Those who want silence will never find it easy from an early issue, that is a plain and simple fact.

Pink Floyd’s homage to original guitarist/vocalist Syd Barrett, this has always been one of the band’s most popular albums and justifiably so. Many fans will still tolerate less than quiet pressings of this record to enjoy the true drama and impact of this beautifully produced album. Vinyl still has the edge in terms of dynamic range and impact and my LP12 made this record sound quite stunning – and this one has no pressing noises, cutting rasps or inherent surface noise. I play all my records on an Linn LP12 front end, it is ruthlessly revealing. So any copy that plays with little unwanted is an exceptional copy as far as I am concerned. Anyone buying this album ‘blind’ is taking a huge risk – a full play-grade is mandatory to avoid often huge disappointment. I always enjoy the potential pleasure from a clean looking copy – the saxophone break on ‘Diamond’ still sends a shiver down the spine as does the effects on ‘Machine’. Regarding the cover: most-all buyers removed the black shrinkwrap – myself very much included when I bought a copy on the day of issue. I did not even consider keeping it on, I wanted to see the real cover not something that resembled a dustbin liner. Time changes opinions, and some want the original packaging as well, but being honest, it does little for me. All the other original elements of this copy are in super condition, very mild ageing hints on the white cover, but little else, and for many collectors, this could be the copy they have been waiting for.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this being somewhat conservative on such a wear-prone cover. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England. Includes original wide opening, deep recessed inner sleeve, serrated post card and the huge original cover sticker – that the more important element to keep – but that too often discarded.

Cover Front: Any ageing on this cover is very light and mild, any disclouration gentle and light, as are any of the very few surface creases that show little. The odd small edge burr trace or tip crease, but no ring wear or barely any impression. Just the odd polite reminder of a cover now fast approaching 40-years-old, and personally, I have no qualms with that.

Cover Back: The back is very similar: a faint hint of grubbiness on the edges, but way less than most I have seen. Even fewer surface creases or marks, and again, no ring wear.

Top Edge: Very lightly darkened with very little rubbing and still straight. The odd rear end panel burr trace being critical.

Bottom Edge: A little quite light rubbing, a little more near the right corner. The surface being white, so it shows little. Again very straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint as mostly seen critically viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, this early example has the deeply pinched manufactured ends which always makes this cover appear more refined and attractive. Many had the ends fully square. Any darkening slight and practically all the text near perfect and unworn. Just one very fine hairline crease has clipped the ‘U’ in ‘YOU’, but little else to fault.

Corners: The right pair have rubbed a little, less so on the spine pair. All being white, this has little visual impact. The odd small tip crease and overall fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very solid and nice looking example, many get scruffy, soiled with grime and ring wear which this has largely avoided. No shrinkwrap, but a nice early-made cover that can be fully seen and enjoyed to a very high extent. One that should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve & Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined thick card inner and again never good for the record’s surface. Most discerning collectors immediately transferred the record to a lined inner to avoid abrasions to the playing surfaces. Often too late however, as many had marked in manufacture as the LP was rammed inside in the factory packing process. This often discolours as badly as the cover and many have sizeable edge splits, this one has avoided both with any hints of ageing minimal and faint. First-made ones had the near full-width top opening, these with shaped corners and deeply recessed, as per this one. The opening area is near pristine with any burring or nicking to the edges nigh-on minuscule. Any rim impression very faint indeed and barely a crease to be seen. All edges unsplit with NO repairs, the one shaped bottom corner is vented in manufacture. This will not prove too easy to find much better.

The Post Card: MINT(-): this is the original serrated edged type, many are smooth cut and are more commonly seen on later pressings. The ‘perforations’ are all very neat indeed and have avoided the burring or white tips many are seen with. These ‘saw-teeth’ edge cards are more vulnerable to damage and here, all the performations are full and crisp. The back still mint and ultra clean with no toning or marks. The front has a super glossy finish with no dulling or abrasions, any marks minute even with point-blank scrutiny under angled light – this retains immaculate freshness and rich deep colour. This is as close to prisine as you will ever get and will seldom be found better.

The Shrinkwrap Sticker: MINT(-): this is the original large sticker that was applied to the original black shrinkwrap. The back still has the shrinkwrap attached and this has been very carefully removed with the circle rim crisp, pick-mark-free and untorn, or even crinkled. This has barely aged at all with rich colour retained and no grubbiness. The lack of creasing or damage to this sticker is rare as many when applied had creased from day one. This I do consider an important part of the set and this is very nice indeed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): side one worthy of the extra (+). Only very fine and faint surface marks seen critically under bright angled light. As I always state for records that came inside tight unlined hard card inner sleeves, the surfaces rarely escape minor surface abrasions, often inflicted with rough, hand-packing in the factory. Probably done on piece-work as fast as possible to meet demand. The crucial factor is the lack of mottling or dulling in the vinyl, which immediately tells me, this is pressing on better quality vinyl. So often records were pressed on recycled vinyl – that a mixture of new and melted down returned records. That so often meant label as well. I remember buying a copy of ‘Earthbound’ by King Crimson back in the day, that actually had a piece of old record label sticking out of the record. The blackness and high purity of this copy is clearly why is plays way better than many and without doubt, this has been played very little. As stated, this album was mass-produced in huge numbers to meet demand. The purity of the vinyl often very questionable and that is the main reason why so many of these (and other big-sellers around this time) were not as quiet as they could have been. This one solidly pressed as well with an above average weight of 136 grams – many were pressed so thin, they sagged in the middle when held. No rough handling or mistreatment from old heavy-tracking record players, and any of the very faint surface traces purely superficial and non-sounding. There are NO penetrating scratches on this very clean and attractive copy. This should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I reitterate, I have heard so many really bad copies of this record (that I will not offer), this one plays with little unwanted and was a real pleasure. One of the most difficult in the Floyd catalogue that will play well, and probably the most mass-produced for a market that was guaranteed to sell in vast number. Often with considerable and loud crackle, often present on the majority of the record. Here any surface sound is gentle, very light and infrequent, in fact little was heard at all, and this from an album with several quite passages and silence on any copy is a considerable demand. The very beginning of side one has silence that slowly builds up, finding one that has barely any noise here especially is beyond difficult – hardly anything on this one. If anyone has a copy that plays absolutely perfectly for it’s entirety, well treasure it because it’s the exceptional rather than the rule. A beautifully produced album with breathtaking sound and dynamics and this plays with powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed audio quality, this is genuine high fidelity masterpiece. Such a pity the pressing quality did not alway match it. I am asked so often by regular buyers if I have a ‘perfect’ ‘Wish You Were Here’, but only very rarely can I offer a copy that even approaches that standard. An evergreen high fidelity favourite along with ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, and still used to this day to test quality systems. The astonishing sound that almost takes you into the recording studio itself with the stereo imagery of ‘Welcome to the Machine’ and the power of the bass synth offering amazing depth, slam and resolution. A real test for any equipment and pressing. The lack of pops and significant clicks is good news and I state again, few will avoid them totally. This is a great album musically and deserves it’s masterpiece status that remains undimished over the years. My Sondek gleans every available piece of information that even the lauded CD remasters fail to produce. There is something really special in owning a really early issue ‘Wish You Were Here’, and I would consider this a keeper-copy for most. Unless squeaky clean digital sound silence is mandatory – if such a record even exists – this should please the majority of collectors and it merits strong recommendation.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic, and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps, sticks, warps or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE.

Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment:

Deck: Linn LP12/Hercules/Cirkus with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Rondo Red moving coil cartridge (tracks at 2 grams). Amps: Naim Nait 5i with Project USB phono stage and Chord interconnects. Speakers: B&W 704 Floorstanding 3-way Monitors (bi-wired with Terrarium Black terminated cable). All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional VPI-17 vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too. Pictures taken with a Nikon D5000 SLR Digital Camera.

PACKING - THIS IS WHAT YOU GET.

What You Get: To confirm to the strict Ebay rules on shipping, I must now send ALL my packets ‘Signed-For’ with NO exceptions. Both buyers and sellers want their packets to have a safer journey and this is not a bad thing.

I now offer the fastest possible posting, often the very next day after payment is received or within two to three days maximum (unless on holiday). I only use FIRST-CLASS Mail. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but ‘Signed-For’ posting is NOT an option anymore. I do not profit on posting and the cost of this lavish packing is NOT even charged for, I offer probably the best-value and safest shipping possible for ultimate confidence. The boxes and ultra thick double-wall stiffeners and bubble wrap make a near impregnable fortress for safe shipping and this is used inland and overseas for ALL my records, not just the rare and expensive. I will invoice any winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction ends. My ‘loss’ or ‘damage rate’ is less than one in two thousand+ based on over 8,000+ items sold in over 10 years of Ebay trading and I consider that pretty exceptional. The only damage rate acceptable for this seller is ZERO and I think my packets will offer just that. It would take a vicious postman or postal service to damage these for sure. Even one of these stiffeners cannot be bent by hand, so what chance 2 inside a box? Oneadayrecords is a MAILER-FREE ZONE. I discount of course for multiple purchases with a maximum of FIVE records per box (one double can sometimes be included subject to total weight). All postage costs are below and at the top of the listing.

NOTE: First Time Bidders: Please ask me first.

PLEASE NOTE: I now exercise my right to open a dispute after the Ebay rule of FOUR days if no payment is received. I will then cancel the dispute to end the, again after the mandatory FOUR days and then offer the item to the runner-up or relist. The non-payer will also be blocked from my Ebay site and they take the Ebay consequences (a strike or removal from the system). Small businesses need prompt payment to trade and these strict rules WILL be applied.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
