It begins when the 'lacquers' arrive from a band's mastering studio. These are aluminium discs coated with a special lacquer, which is carved using a heated diamond cutting stylus, enabling the digital sounds on the studio master tapes to be converted into analogue form.
Once the lacquer has been assigned its matrix number (ie, identification code), it's sprayed with a thin layer of pure silver in order to make it electrically conductive.
The now-shimmering silver disc is then plunged into a vat of nickel sulphamate solution and, as in some marvellous school-chemistry crystal-growing experiment - the ageing vats are more reminiscent of your old school lab or ceramics department than a hi-tech factory - the ions of nickel begin to grow on the silver surface.

After four-and-a-half hours a disc of pure nickel about the thickness of an LP has formed on one side of the lacquer. This coating is known as the 'master'. It's the negative of the lacquer.
The next stage is to convert this negative back into a positive. First, its edges are trimmed, and the disc of nickel is peeled off from the lacquer.
Then, after an invisible coating has been applied, the master is plunged back into another vat of nickel sulphamate solution and the process is repeated, only this time a 'positive' is being produced from the 'negative'. This positive, also made of nickel, is called the 'mother'
