Description
On offer here is a very early pressing of the classic Atom Heart Mother in superb condition. Of course being a first press it has no EMI on the labels and has the matrix numbers A-1G & B-1G. The bible of all things Pink Floyd - pinkfloydarchives.com - has the Mother Stampers L1 and GP1 as number four on its matrix information list. This particular one has very similar matrices L1 and GP2 so is still obviously one of the earliest first pressings and on listening to the entire LP it is definitely one to own!
Visual grading
Under a strong bright light it has retained that glossy sheen of new vinyl and is visually stunning. I can only see a couple of faint hairlines on each side but they certainly have no affect on the audio. I do not think the record has been played very much such is the quality.
Play grading
When you consider how quiet much of this LP is it is rare to find one in this condition. Side One plays so clearly with only the faintest of intermittent static. The audio has amazing depth and clarity and the quiet passages play superbly well. There really is hardly any crackle to speak of and there are no skips or jumps and I only heard one click during the whole playback. There is perhaps a little distortion towards the end of 'Atom Heart Mother' but that maybe more due to my stereo system than anything else.
'If' plays with some very faint static here and there but is still a superb listen for such a quiet track. 'Summer '68' is stunning and plays with wonderful clarity. I just heard one faint click towards the end. 'Fat Old Sun' plays equally as well with almost zero static. The intro to 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' is sublime and sounds like the vinyl was pressed yesterday! I cannot stress just how good the vinyl is on this LP it could almost be graded as Mint. The remainder of the track plays superbly with no faults at all. The drip at the end will of course continue endlessly on a manual turntable until the needle is lifted off the record.
To summarise this is an absolutely stunning A-1G / B-1G first press. Whatever static that can be heard is hardly worth mentioning and this is without doubt one of the best I have ever heard, if not the best. The audio is astoundingly good for a vinyl that is now 45 years old.
Cover
The G & L gatefold is in excellent condition with only minor shelf wear. The edges are superbly clean and the wide spine is 100% legible with hardly any wear even at the top and bottom which is very rare. There is a little rubbing on the opening edge corners and a very faint crease running along the front of the cover but apart from that this is one of the best first press gatefolds I have seen in a long time. It is extremely clean with no marks or writing at all and being a first press it has on the inside "7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent no 943,895 SHVL 781" in the lower left hand corner. The inside is also exceptionally clean.
Inner sleeve
Also included is the original polylined sleeve advertising various releases including 'The Madcap Laughs' and 'Ummagumma'. It is in excellent condition with no rips tears, just minor creasing.
Labels
The yellow/green labels are in stunning condition with no marks or writing and of course have no EMI logo as per the first presses.
Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system.
