Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 132 grams. A good weight for this first issue, subsequent pressings that came with the standard cover were usually lighter.

Rarity: Rare: these first issues with the very different packaging are now becoming very hard to find. The standard single cover versions are much easier to find.

Brief Info: A band that always gave the audience a great time at the festivals between 1970-73, along with The Edgar Broughton Band and Hawkwind - they almost became a staple diet at these events and fans loved them. One of the legendary packages within this genre of acid-rock, the original had very different packaging to subsequent versions. The sleeve came in a printed PVC cover with an inner gatefold sleeve and a printed Polydor-style inner sleeve with photograph of the band on one side. These were limited, soon to be replaced with the single sleeve version which is much more easily found. Some initial copies included a pink record, but these are nigh-on impossible to find with only 200 reputedly ever made. This copy’s packaging had some ageing and as per most, the seams on PVC bag have some splitting top and bottom, but the record looks hardly even played and sound superb. So often I have heard the singles cover version records crackle and this, by a distance is the cleanest pressing I have yet heard. The outer bag over time tends to go brittle and the parts that fit inside were such a tight fit, edge splits are near impossible to avoid unless the contents are left out of it – that was not often as most-all found have some edge splitting. Still a great package from the era of creative covers and now becoming genuinely rare. Overall, this is a very solid example and the record exceptional, not for the absolute packaging perfectionist, but the record is lovely. Sometimes for the rarer pieces, a little compromise has to be given. A full description of all the parts are outlayed further down.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: All parts of this set are immensely fragile and delicate.

What’s Included: The main screen printed PVC outer bag. A gatefold single thickness card inner ‘cover’. A polylined Polydor-style customised inner sleeve. Printed and made in England.

The PVC Cover: EXCELLENT: I am not really taking into consideration of the edge splits top and bottom because finding them with none is close to impossible if the contents have been stored inside all these years. As the splits are very neat, they hardly even show. This grading is based on looks and this one really looks more than highly respectable. The rich deep purple ink is unchipped and very solid and richly coloured. The clear areas show a little fogging but only modestly so when held to light with a few light surface marks too. Three faint words appear on the large ‘NVN’ on the title near the bottom, I am struggling to make my mind up if they should be there or not. If these were pen written, I am certain they would remove easily, but no, so the jury is out on that. They are only light anyway and show little unless a white back-drop is placed behind. The edges are as follows: right edge is the entrance, this is ultra neat, crisp and sharp. The top edge has about the first quarter split from right to left. The bottom edge has two splits which is almost entire with around an inch bridge between the two. The left edge is totally unsplit and solid. What makes this ultra fragile cover still look nice is the fact it still lays very flat with no curl and barely any burring, the edge splits almost totally inconspicuous. Unsually, the plastic is still quite soft and pliable and devoid of the brittleness so many seem get. Overall, a strong one, clearly not perfect, but such examples are seldom seen or ever made available.

The Inner Cover: EXCELLENT: single thickness with single manufactured fold to create a gatefold inner. The pink inside is unique to this much rarer example and apart from two or three light surface creases, looks almost perfect. Any rubbing or grubbiness hardly registers and the pink artwork clean and vibrant. The outer faces with artwork similar to the single cover version are also clean and excellent looking. Very slight rubbing on the spine fold but even this is fairly erect and unflattened. A little slight set-off viewed right up close but generally very clean with intense colour retained. Again a few very light surface creases that show little and all edges mainly sharp with just a little thickening or burr trace here and there and the same on the corner tips. Given how thin this is, it has more than stood the test-of-time and has remained untorn and attractive.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: a little aged, more on the white side with some mildish set-off and some moderate glue darkening on the seams. This is a solid, no window style Polydor inner with a very customised front with the band hiding in the foliage. This important graphic, again unique to this rarer format copy, is in lovely condition with not a lot to fault. There is some creasing and crinkle but all the edges are sound and unsplit, if a little rubbed. This includes the date code of 20 0571 and is an integral part of the set.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): and a superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface blemishes being ultra few, fine and faint. Although the delicate cover has aged a little, the record itself has survived in supreme condition and the matrixes more than proves how early it is along with the recessed ring label ridge. Later ones had those matrix ‘1’s changed to 2’s and 3’s etc and the label was then totally flat. All evidence strongly suggests this has been hardly played and visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is practically as good as they ever get. Not the greatest production of all time being a fairly quiet and muted recording that is best enjoyed with more volume and even turning up the treble if you amp has one (mine doesn’t). Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Just a little surface sound noted on the final couple of revs of the final song, not a scratch but within the pressing. Talking of pressing: this is one of the cleanest I have ever heard. I have sold several standard issue copies of this album on Ebay over the past 10 years, and none have been quieter than this. A record that often has considerable crackle and surface noise, well this one has barely any at all and this was the most enjoyable ‘Never Never Land’ I have played for years. A trait of the first issues I suppose, even slightly later ones were made within the era of the great oil shortage when vinyl was often recycled or mixed making some records sound less than wonderful. This is NOT such a pressing and this remains an impressive copy all-round. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, I can, of course, not help the production quality that is a little flat, but that’s just the way it was made. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: Overall, a very pleasing and complete example of this very rare original classic rock album. The first I have seen for several years infact. The PVC bag has issues, but truly, most-all will have. Often the top and bottom edges are totally split making it open like a gatefold cover, this in real terms, still relatively intact and still solid, but extremely delicate. Importantly, it still looks nice. Some ageing to the inner sleeve, but this is fully intact and again looks nice. The inner cover is very nice indeed and few will better this significantly. The record is exceptional and offers possibly the best sound you will ever heard on vinyl. So, not a copy for the cover perfectionist but all considered – rarity, fragility, format and age – it’s an impressive example. If you have any doubts on anything clearly mentioned above, do not bid. But with this album, in this rare early format all but drying up now, it’s more than worthy of consideration. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
