“La importancia de llamarse Pijuán”

Israel Sánchez-Coll (ISC): Señor Pijuán, coméntenos ¿Cómo se gesto su sexteto?

Pedro Piñero González (Pijuán): Déjeme primeramente agradecerles a ustedes, por está entrevista y también agradecer a todos sus lectores por interesarse en conocer el trasfondo de la agrupación que yo organizara hace ya casi 40 años.  Comenzamos allá para el año 1966 en el Hotel Condado Beach.  Este hotel está cerrado hoy día, pero lo están restaurando para una posible reapertura el año entrante, (2004).  Para el año 1966, funcionaba dentro de ese hotel una barrita o “Lounge” que tenía vista al mar, esa barrita se llamaba “El Tradewinds Bar”, y allí fui a trabajar con un contrato para tan sólo 4 músicos.  Enseguida me di cuenta que, para poder lograr un sonido o timbre indentificativo y además tuviésemos fuerza rítmica, necesitaría agregar 2 músicos.  Seis era el número perfecto con el que entendía se podía lograr el objetivo.  Me di la tarea  de convencer al gerente del hotel para que me asignara el presupuesto necesario y así poder costear los 2 músicos adicionales de nuestra propuesta. El argumento que utilicé fue el de garantizarle al hotel música continua y sin interrupciones durante toda la noche.  Me dieron el visto bueno, y así empezamos el experimento.

ISC: ¿Cuántos álbumes produjo con su sexteto?        

Pijuán: Ahora no me acuerdo exactamente, pero fueron cerca de veintidós o veintitrés. El primero fue en el año 1966 donde al álbum se le hizo una carátula con dos títulos. Al primero se le puso un nombre en ingles “Swing with the Tide” después se le puso: “El Florón”, luego de que se vendiera la primera tirada.

ISC: ¿Quiénes integraron el sexteto a sus comienzos?        

Pijuán: Batista, e Israel “Cortito” Corcino estuvieron al principio en el bajo.  “Cortito” estuvo en las grabaciones de los dos primeros discos sencillos.  Después, entró Héctor “Cuco” Rivera en el bajo, pero también “doblaba” en la guitarra eléctrica y el saxofón. Reinaldo Santiago estaba en el timbal, Paquito Álvarez era el cantante, y a la vez  tocaba conga y percusión menor.  Paquito venía de las orquestas de Mario Ortiz y la de Johnny “El Bravo” López.  Finalmente estaba yo en el piano, en el órgano, la lyra, la melódica  y escribiendo los arreglos.

No obstante, pasaron muchos otros destacadísimos músicos que enriquecieron el producto musical que nuestro sexteto ofrecía, la lista es larga y algunos de estos músicos son: Ramón “Tato” Rivera (†), trompeta y bajo; Pepito Maldonado guitarra, vocales y percusión menor; Joe Canoura, saxofón alto y tenor además de la flauta —él venía de la orquesta de Ray Barretto—;  Jesús Caunedo (†) saxofón alto y flauta, —Caunedo venía de la orquesta de Tito Puente y la banda gigante de Julio Gutiérrez—; Joaquín “Tato”  Colón, bongo, timbales y batería —él había estado con el cuarteto de Manuel Jiménez “La pulguita” y con la orquesta de Cesar Concepción—; Willy “Chua” Segura, conga, —quien venía de la Orquesta Siboney y la de Pepito Torres—; Freddy Miranda, saxofón alto y flauta —ahora esta con el Gran Combo de Puerto Rico—;  Pedro Chiclana, saxofón y flauta, —estuvo con la orquesta del maestro Joe Quijano—; Joaquín Rosa, congas; Tino Labour (†), saxofón alto y flauta; Miguel Rodríguez, saxofón alto y tenor  además de la flauta, —cuando entró a nuestro grupo estaba recién salido del Apollo Sound—; Horacio Blanc, guitarra —venía de Argentina y había estado allá con los Cinco Latinos—; Milito Cruz, guitarra; Raffi Carrión, bajo; Kike Talabera, batería —Kike fue el Director musical de José Luis Rodríguez “El Puma”, hoy tiene su propia agrupación en Puerto Rico—; Pito Sepúlveda, trompeta, flouglehorn, trombón y vocalista —también estaba recién salido de la Orquesta Siboney, de Pepito Torres, donde había permanecido 20 años. Herminio Diaz, Saxofon Alto-Flauta y coros, y al día de hoy, con un Doctorado en Música y trabajando como catedrático de una Universidad en los Estados Unidos,  Neftali Piñeyro-Guitarra eléctrica, —recien salido de El Sexteto La Playa. Louie García tocaba el bajo, y hoy esta considerado como uno de los más destacados arreglistas de salsa. También estuvo Wilson Vélez en el bajo y los coros.

Los cantantes que tuvimos fueron: Paquito Álvarez, Johnny “Belleza” González (†), Tony Guayama, Aníbal Hernández y Sammy Aguirre.  Otros cantantes estuvieron con nosotros en el cabaret, pero no intervinieron en las grabaciones, ellos fueron: Héctor Negrón, Valdo Díaz, Chico Rivera —quien había alcanzado muchísima popularidad como el cantante estelar  de la Orquesta Panamericana en sus momentos cumbres.  Para principios de los años 60 estuvo una temporada, cerca de nueve meses, con nosotros. Chali Hernández —el hijo del maestro Rafael Hernández—, Esteban Rivera, Pedro Sanz y Eduard Delgado.

VINYL GRADING SCALE:

Near Mint (NM) 

(Jacket) If the jacket is sealed there may be some minor corner damage from storage, it may or may not have the shrink-wrap, but the jacket itself will be in pristine condition. The corners will show very little wear (there will be no fraying) and will still be somewhat pointy to the touch. The cover will show no more than very minor dents or some single creases, no full bends that will cause multiple creases/damage. There will be no visible ring wear. No writing, rips or tears on the cover or seams. No bubbling, water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way. The inside of the gate-fold will be in the same condition.  Cutout bin punches, price stickers, staples would start being listed at the NM category and would be noted accordingly as they affect the jacket itself.

(LP) You should not hear any surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain that just opened appearance. There may be a surface blemish or two, but they will not have any affect on the sound. There will be no warping. There will be no major blemishes, light or deep scratches. The label will be free of writing and stains. There should be no spindle marks. 

Excellent (VG++) 

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink-wrap but the jacket itself will still be in beautiful condition. The corners will have minimal wear (no fraying).There may be minor dents and creases . Light scratches could be on the jacket, but nothing severe. Depending on age some discolor/yellowing may show, but will not be overbearing.  Ring wear should be very minimal or non-existent...no dark, full, half, or quarter rings. No writing rips or tears. No bubbling, water stains or peeling of the cover . All inner gate-folds will be in similar condition. Covers that appear NM but has a notch, Sawcut or a diagonal cut will be graded as VG++!

(LP) You should not hear any sustained surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain its most of it's glossiness and will appear like new. There may be a few surface blemishes, or a stray light scratch that may cause a moment of crackling, but nothing prolonged, and instances of this will be few. Often this will mostly occur only at the beginning of the groove on each side where the needle dropped. There will be no warping. There will be no deep scratches. There may be minor spotting or fog, but it will not affect the sound. The label will be free of writing and stains. Minimal spindle marks. 

Very Good Plus (VG+) 

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink wrap.  There may be some easier to see imperfections, though nothing that will detract from the overall appearance in a major way. The corners will have some wear and there may be the beginnings of fraying but not full on.  Some dents/creases or scratches may be noticeable, but nothing too pronounced. There could be noticeable discolor/yellowing .There may be some minor ring wear at the top and bottom; again you would have to look for it. No writing, rips or tears. Possibly some light bubbling.  No water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way. 

(LP) There may be some blemishes, maybe a scratch or two, but nothing too deep. It will not cause the record to skip or repeat. There will be no prolonged surface noise. There may be some minor warping but it will have no affect on the listening experience at all. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG+ record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. 

Very Good (VG/VG-) TO BE SOLD AS IS!!!

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink wrap.  There will be some easier to see imperfections, though nothing that will detract from the overall appearance in a major way. The corners will have some wear or fraying possibly causing seam splitting close to the seam.  There may be split seams on any side.  Usually not full side splits though.  Sometimes they may be fixed by tape, sometimes not. Some dents/creases or scratches will  be noticeable on the jacket, sometimes pronounced. Discolor and yellowing can be commonplace, as are smaller water/mold stains and some bubbling. There maybe a smaller tear on the cover, but nothing overly pronounced. Ring wear will certainly be pronounced. There may be some writing/defacing, but it will be minor. 

(LP) There will be some blemishes, and some few scratches. They should not be at the feel-able stage though. There could be a skip or repeat, but only one or two at most. More often the deeper scratches will cause more frequent and prolonged surface noise. There may be some warping but it will not cause the needle to jump. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG/VG- record will obviously have been played and occasionally handled roughly by the original owner.
