THIS ITEM COMES FROM THE INCREDIBLE, SINGLE-OWNER COLLECTION WE ACQUIRED A WHILE AGO, IN WHICH ITEMS ORIGINALLY BOUGHT BY THE OWNER FROM THE MID-1970s to THE MID-2010s WERE KEPT STILL SEALED IN A NEAR-LABORATORY, TIME-CAPSULE CONDITIONS AND IN PRACTICALLY CLIMATE- AND HUMIDITY- CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT.  CONDITIONS OF SOME OF THESE ITEMS RANGE FROM IMPECCABLE TO TRULY UNBELIEVABLE. SOME OF THESE BEAUTIFUL MUSEUM PIECES LOOKED SO PERFECT THAT WE HAD TO REINSPECT AND RE-EXAMINE THEM A FEW TIMES TO MAKE SURE THEY OUR EYES ARE NOT DECEIVING US.

Rough Mix, Pete Townshend's 1977 collaboration with former Small Faces and Faces songwriter and bass player Ronnie Lane, combines the loose, rollicking folk-rock of Lane's former band, Slim Chance, with touches of country, folk, and New Orleans rock & roll, along with Townshend's own trademark style. Lane's tunes, especially the beautiful "Annie," possess an understated charm, while Townshend, with songs such as "Misunderstood," the Meher Baba-inspired "Keep Me Turning," and the strange love song "My Baby Gives It Away," delivers some of the best material of his solo career. Rough Mix stands as a minor masterpiece and an overlooked gem in both artists' vast bodies of work. Eric Clapton, John Entwistle, and Charlie Watts guest.

This disc is an outstanding collaboration between Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane. The story goes that Ronnie had been asking to record with Pete for several years -- likely looking for a major career boost after suffering heavy financial losses with his Slim Chance carnival tours across the rural areas of the U.K. The sequencing of songs alternates between Pete's songs and Ronnie's. Highlights include "My Baby Gives It Away," the ballad "Annie" -- featuring Eric Clapton, Cat's Melody and "Misunderstood." This disc represents the best musical performances of Lane after 1976, as the multiple sclerosis began eating away at his talents. A great musical partnership is heard on every track.

A Note on Classic Records: Acclaimed reissue label specializing in audiophile LP reissues of classic albums; employed its own custom-built tube-based mastering equipment on all of its releases; masters its releases from original master tapes (or the best sources available). Earliest releases were a box set of RCA Living Stereo classical titles and Verve jazz titles (subsequently sold individually). Classic used 180 gram vinyl until 2001. That year they switched to 180 gram "SV" (Super Vinyl) and added a sticker specifying the type of vinyl to all their LPs. They introduced 200 gram "Quiex SV-P" in July 2002. That was followed by "SV-P II" and, in 2008, "Clarity Vinyl." In the 2000s, they also introduced lower priced versions of many of their LPs, pressed from the same masters but on regular 150, 140, or 120 gram vinyl. Represses were always done on the latest vinyl formulation and can be dated by the sticker. Classic also produced a line of gold CDs in the 1990s and then 24/96 HDAD digital disks. Mastering was typically done at Bernie Grundman Mastering by Grundman himself or Chris Bellman. Classic's assets were purchased by Acoustic Sounds in 2010
