PETE LA ROCA “Basra” Blue Note Records 4205, “P”, “Van Gelder,” mono vinyl.
This is the mono, 1965, first edition,“Van Gelder”-stamped, “P”-pressing of PETE LA ROCA’s “Basra” on the New York USA labels of Blue Note BLP 4205. Musicians include Joe Henderson, Steve Kuhn, Steve Swallow, La Roca.
VINYL has consistent very low-volume-level surface noise throughout. Pops and ticks, some repeating. But recording is very dynamic, largely overcoming surface noise. Worst example is the album’s centerpiece “Lazy Afternoon” where pops and ticks grow loud. However, bulk of the music is reproduced rich and clear, with no distortion, no warps, no skips, as is the custom with all 1st pressing Lexington to New York USA Blue Note pressings. Excellent gloss, a handful of hairline marks. A series of scuffs are feelable on Side 1. The New York USA labels are very clean with minimal spindle marks. See photos.
The COVER is in excellent condition. Solid colors and inking. No spine or seam split. 1” cracking on lower seam. Corners worn. See photos. “Blue Note Records Inc., 43 West 61st St., New York 23” back jacket in excellent condition. Aging evident. “REVIEW COPY” stamp. Corners worn. See photos.
This LP was play-tested on a high-end system consisting of Music Hall MMF-7.3 turntable/Ortofon Bronze cartridge/Music Hall Moo Mat, Heed Audio Elixir integrated amplifier, Heed Quasar Phono stage and Quad S2 speakers (with revealing ribbon tweeters).
