Description
On offer is the eponymous 1970 LP by PATTO on VERTIGO, on the SPIRAL/SWIRL VERTIGO label, catalogue number 6360 016. NB This is an original German pressing.
PATTO, whose influence far outstripped their record sales, boasted one of the all-time great rock singers in Mike Patto, and one of the more adventurous and technically gifted guitarists of the era in Olly Halsall. A heightened sense of the absurd and a penchant for musical eclecticism possibly barred them from mass acceptance. They could freak-out with the best but also extemporise in a subtle, jazzy way, as when Halsall swops guitar for vibes in 'The Man', just when you expect a rocking climax. That track also contains an aside from Mike Patto ("It's alright now") that surely caught the ears of young Paul Rogers of Free. Trivia buffs might like to note that the group contained future Rutle drummer, John Halsey.
This is their debut, released in December 1970, and produced by Muff Winwood. It sold 5,000 copies and Winwood must have been asleep at the switches. Whatever, it suffers unfeasibly low recording levels. When 'The Man' reappeared on the Vertigo retrospective 'Time Machine' it was half the volume of every other track, and the fault can be traced back to the original vinyl. This is compounded by the low-grade early seventies German vinyl, so that the pops and scuffs have more presence than some great, great music. I would grade it at VERY GOOD PLUS, on the understanding that inferior sound is characteristic of the original release.
The sleeve is also in very good plus condition, with minor wear and ring-wear on the back. The German issue was smooth, as opposed to the UK issue, which was textured. The labels are clean, and bear the legend "A Philips Record Product". It comes in a poly lined inner sleeve.
