NEW / SEALED AND UNPLAYED

This may not be the hippest Smith album to like, but it certainly gets the most spins around my place.   Years before I knew she was a coffee-shop poetry weirdo, I happened upon a copy of this classic.  For these 8 songs, she is the Queen of the Rock.  Smith, Television, Blondie, Richard Hell…all of them may be associated with burning down traditional rock music…but these albums are light years away from DIY - featuring so much guitar, and impressive production.  The Queen purrs, croons, and bellows away to the dazzling urbanites in cuts like the riffy “Don’t Ask the Angels”, the noisy deconstruction of the title track,  and the spellbinding ‘Pissing in a River”, built around a fantastic weeping Lenny Kaye solo.   “Poppies” is the tour de force as far as I’m concerned, the pulsing bassline and cool harmonics laying down a blueprint for territory the first couple of Pretenders albums would mine successfully.  “Radio Ethiopia” may not be the ultimate artistic statement – but it’s a damn fine proto-art-punk record.
