A recent MEDIA fiasco has decimated my poster business. Sales are way down while everyone is finger pointing. In light of the sudden-death armageddon that has presented itself, I've decided to blow this RARE disc OUT with an equally dramatic price drop ?BELOW COST!!! I normally would never do this, but since the end is near I feel I have no choice, and so now is your chance to get this at a tiny dot fraction of what it's worth! **RARE** Wizard Of OZ 1939 MGM AIR TRAILER!!!

Here's a SUPER RARE 16" Original Wizard Of OZ Movie Theater & Radio Transcription Disc that was NEVER sold in stores: AN INDUSTRY ONLY MGM Air-Trailer made for the original 1939 LAUNCH at the famous Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood:

• This is a disc that will dazzle all of your friends! Here's perhaps the best of all the movie air trailer discs ever made. It's a real museum piece. The disc tells the story of how Baum developed the franchise and Oz over the decades to the point where MGM would embrace it as its signature musical. It has many highlights from the film, including the entire "Over the Rainbow" song sung by Judy Garland. Interestingly, the cut on this transcription disc is NOT the cut that MGM released on Decca Records for sale to the public back in 1939. It's actually the cut they used onscreen in the film. Amazingly, the film version's Academy Award winning cut was not originally released on record back in 1939, with the exception of this INDUSTRY ONLY DISC! On the disc, the MGM narrator says they're, "announcing the early exhibition of its miracle in celluloid - the Technicolor extravaganza The Wizard Of OZ!" They weren't kidding, because this disc came from the legendary Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, where the film had its premier in 1939!

• Loew's ordered this disc to be sent to Hollywood to play AT the theater to warm-up the waiting audiences.  

  The original label on this transcription disc reads: /Loew's Chinese/

  Most people are unaware of the fact that The Wizard Of OZ was owned and distributed by Loew's Inc in 1939. That's because Loew's didn't put their logo at the front of the film or before the public. Nevertheless, Loew's was behind the distribution of the The Wizard Of OZ, its posters, advertising, Radio, and, Movie Theater promotions. I tried to find some tangible "Industry" artifact from the first campaign that demonstrates this fact. I found one collector who had the very rare bag that the lobby card sets were originally distributed in. He was kind enough to let me photograph the printing on the top, for reference. So, in kind, I've posted a digital copy of the photo here on eBay, for reference ONLY - The bag is NOT included in this auction!

• Check out photo #4: It indeed does show that Loew's did distribute the product.

• THIS TRANSCRIPTION DISC WAS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO THE MOVIE THEATERS! Because this is a 16 inch transcription disc, a common Radio Industry item found in the 1930's, it's been mistakenly dismissed by vintage Movie Theater collectors as not related to the cinema experience. WRONG! MGM offered this disc directly for play to the movie theaters - via the campaign book (see photo #5).

  $3.00 was 20 times more expensive than the cost of the one-sheet. In fact, the transcription disc was by far the single most expensive item to order for a movie theater promotion on Oz. That meant, not many were ordered. Loew's had this special advance copy of the transcription disc sent free to the Chinese Theater, as it was the venue that premiered the film in Hollywood - thus the /Loew's Chinese/ written on the label. Three big ones $$$ for anyone else in the business, except, of course, for the radio stations (see photo #5).

• Sparing no expense, Loew's had the actual house that fell on The Wicked Witch of the East reconstructed to be on full display at the Chinese Theater as part of the festivities for the premier as well. Lucky ticket holders got to see Dorthy's unshakable dwelling along with Douglas Fairbanks' footprints, all for the meager price of $2.20. Actually, that was a lot of money back then, even for orchestra seats at a Chinese Premier. Again, I forward this information for context and reference.

  Historically, everything surrounding The Wizard of Oz has always proven to be expensive, from the elaborate printing and publishing of the original L. Frank Baum book, to the selling of the movie rights to make the MGM musical, It always involved a special extra bit of money to make it happen. Though well worth it, the original book was printed with extra colors, and so it cost a bit extra to make and buy. Same with the musical, it was filmed with five hundred pound early 3-strip Technicolor cameras, and with all of the other special factors considered, it cost a boatload to make. No doubt, they didn't skimp on the promotion for this signature MGM release. They were openly touting it as their greatest product ever, and it may have been - They went ALL OUT! Certainly, playing this extravagant 12 minute recording, off the 16" transcription disc - at the theater for live patrons - fits under that umbrella.

• The one-sided 16-inch transcription disc record is in FANTASTIC shape and plays fantastic. I had it professionally transcribed and this 12-minute long treasure sounds terrific!! If you buy-it-now at the FULL $4500 price I'll include the digital wav file of the professional transcription.

• Engraved around the disc itself - in the vinyl - is the original identification information. I've written what's engraved beneath the photos I've posted here on eBay. I've also posted a photo of the back of the disc, which is the breathtaking vintage RCA VICTOR art deco spider web design.

• If you are looking for an investment/museum quality item - or blockbuster Oz piece - look no further: This 1930's Depression Era classic has no equal. This is one of the rarest officially issued MGM items ever to surface. It's FAR rarer than the movie posters, which now sell for over $100,000!
