Rarity: Scarce: and highly collectable for fans of Led Zeppelin. All four members appear and most of the songs included here were arranged by John Paul Jones. A very elusive record that has now become intrinsically linked to the Led Zeppelin catalogue. Any late 1960s Liberty record that can be found with the blue labels rather than the black format that followed are even rarer still. Not only that, this is a super record that plays near perfect with just four or five clicks on side two – barely anything else at all. A very scarce opportunity for fans of this 1960s artist and even more so for Led Zeppelin completists.

Brief Info: By some distance, P. J. Proby’s rarest and most sort-after album simply because of a certain four backing musicians that perform on this album. Here PJP performs in a style not dissimilar to Johnny Cash with some blues material as well that give some clues to the forthcoming Led Zeppelin debut soon to follow – overall, not too easy to pigeonhole. Those four very famous names indeed appear – soon after to form the rock giant Led Zeppelin and this album has now become very much sort-after by their fans. Never an easy title to find especially such an early example and the conditions will make this even more appealing for any serious collector seeking out a top copy. Without any doubt, a record hardly even played and with little to fault for audio quality.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: being a little critical. A single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and including the polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain fine shine with equally fine freshness and clarity. A little lifting on the spine edge, but showing less with a white backdrop. A few laminate creases, but none heavy and a few press marks seen mainly under light. The same for any dulling around the rim which is rarely avoided with a thick heavy record inside all these years. Still an attractive cover, the back particularly so.

Top Edge: Barely worn with smooth solid laminate, also quite straight.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same, the odd hint of thickening to the back end panel being critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with little wear, thickening or burring. Record entered on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Quite solid with one or two gentle creases, quite straight but with patchy compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate, this well centred on a fairly narrow depth.

Corners: A little tip creasing and rubbing, with fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: With some fairly light hints of it’s considerable age, this is not for the perfectionists, but still a nice example of an elusive cover. Many collectors will be more than happy I feel sure.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down a little for natural ageing in the form of darkening of the seam adhesive areas. That apart, little else to fault with two immaculate window circles and very clear polylining that is barely even crinkled. High proof the record has hardly ever been removed. No hard creasing, minor crinkle only and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. Some surface marks on side one, but these have NO sound, few on side two, most which are fine and faint. Just four or five clicks on the final song only, little else on the whole album which plays superbly throughout. Like the cover, not for the visual perfectionist as the gradings suggest, but still an impressive 46-year-old record.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive first issue record plays above its highly respectable visual grading with little to fault bar the aforementioned tiny few clicks on side two. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds minimal and faint, barely anything in fact. An exceptional clean pressing, typical of this quality label at this time – it has some quiet passages, even spoken word, so never easy, but few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. The very brief and tiny few clicks apart, nothing else spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quite unusual record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and merits high recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
