Description

Baron Elmo proudly presents an intense melding of raging punk and progressive rock, served up hot by Baltimore trio OXES: Oxxxes, their second full-length, issued in this limited vinyl edition in 2005 by the Monitor label, then quickly taken out of print. These guys churn out what has to be the last word in that musically complicated genre known as "math rock." Oxes have at times run the risk of overshadowing the impact of their fierce and frenetic instrumental rock with confrontational stage antics and odd pranks, but the undeniable proof of their skill is carved into the grooves of this astonishing album. Going without vocals was a wise move indeed – one can only wince at the thought of the over-the-top singing and verbiage that this music would require. Instead, Oxes stoke a ferocious rock machine that drives like King Crimson on pure crank. The choppy, tense "Boss Kitty" opener sets the tone, with frantically grappling dual guitars ripping up the joint. The crunching, metallic "Kaz Hayashi `01" and frantic "Take and Free Miami" both employ clashing textures and insanely complex shifting time signatures that challenge the listener's expectations of exactly what form a two-guitar-and-drums equation can take. The LP edition of Oxxxes is a radically different package from the CD, housed in a black plastic wrapper to conceal "explicit drug abuse and sexual imagery," which figures both on the cover and on a large poster tucked inside, telling a tale (cautionary?) in photographs in which a shapely young lass drugs the male attendees of a party, then strips nude and has her wicked way with them while they're passed out. The music is pressed on three sides of a two-LP set (done on nice thick vinyl), with an etched fourth side. All in all, a superior package to the CD in every way. This vinyl edition of Oxxxes was limited to a single pressing that sold out instantly.

Both records show some wear, but look fine and play beautifully, while the cover is in superb shape but for a dented upper left-hand corner. We will combine multiple purchases, so the more you buy, the more you save on shipping.
