Our Neighbors Suck - Isolation LP 1985
Rock O Rama Records !
LP comes with the Lyric Insert !
Eine der mysteriösesten, aber gleichzeitg auch eine der besten ROR LPs !!!!
Our Neighbors Suck kamen aus Phoenix, Arizona.
Jetzt bei mir bekam sie dies Ehre zugeilt, he,he.
Tracklist:
1) Doom
2) The Rut
3) HR
4) Don't Cry On My Shoulder
5) Give Me Fun
6) Not Enough
7) ? ? ? ?
8) Make No Mistake
9) FBI
10) Koot De Knu
11) I Don't Know
12) Sanitation Croon
13) Fuck You Guy's
14) Tiptoe Through My Two Lips
I bought this record for no other reason than because it came out on Rock-o-Rama records (RRR 56), one of my all-time favorite labels. I had never heard of these guys at the time and, even now, the only other thing I am aware of by them is a track on one of those "We Got Party" comps that Mystic put out. Well, one would think that getting their music put out by two exquisitely scummy labels would do something for these guys? They certainly sound like a Mystic band! At any rate, this has to be one of the few forays into American Punk/HC that Rock-o-Rama embarked on, as by this time they were drifting more towards the RAC thing. This band was from Phoenix, AZ.
Well, as one may glean from some of the crap I post on the Blog, I am not the one to be offering any sort of definitive critique on such things, so maybe I’m missing something here? Old stuff like this certainly isn’t without its charm, I guess. Maybe I am, indeed, missing something, but the mix on this thing sounds lame and…uh…..yeah….I’m trying not to be a dick, but………….
The drummer, Bob Cox would later go on to be one of the JFA drummers, but ended up bailing because he had a bit o’ drug problem. Not sure on the history of the band outside of being from AZ. They were part of the scene and had pretty good connections to the punk/hardcore scene. Personally I think the band sucked, but I am not a purist like some old punk/hardcore guys.
Ahhh naw you aren’t missing something…Kinda reminds me of Detox vocally at times. It has a bygone sound, that one of bands who, as many others of that time was copped from listening and learning patterns from the first wave dudes and dude-ettes. I give it three turds, out of five being pooptacular.Thank you man!
What’s up man!!! Love your site!!! I’m Mando I played drums on the Isolation LP(was a whopping 15 years old then) and on all recorded and nationally released material(Mystic Records Party Animals /Placebo Records More Coffee For The Politicians/ETC). I can’t believe anyone in the world got their hands on this old thing. I think only 500 were pressed… Thanks for the kind words!!!
You are right the recording is horrible doing the songs no justice. However, read the lyrics if your copy has the sleeve with them printed, there are some genius lyrics on many of the songs pertaining to things that are just now coming to fruition in this world(some 25 years later)the singer and rest of band were on heavy doses of LSD and found the reverb button during the mixing of this album. That combined with the excitement being a bunch of teenagers going from recording in the living room with two mics to being set free in a REAL 24 track studio(unheard of in those days}. Actually our 4 track demo with many of the same songs sounded 100 times better and was received with much fan fare due to friend Kevin Seconds (7 Seconds) hyping the hell out of it and the song Girl’s, Girl’s Girl’s making it to #3 on the "Rodney on the Rock" radio show in LA…
You hit the nail on the head with the "Crappy Label" comment as I was the one in the band that wanted to sign to a label that could help us reach the masses(SST/AlternativeTentacles/Placebo)
instead we were the token anti skinhead Americans on a a pro skinhead/Nazi label (that was way more punk wasn’t it??? LOL!!)…Not a smart move for a pop/punk band trying to actually get popular…
Yes O.N.S. hailed from Phoenix, Arizona. We were a bunch of west side skaters who became the little brother band to many killer groups spawned from the 80’s Arizona underground/skate/punk scene . We also played shows with some of the coolest national bands of the day(GBH,DOA,Circle Jerks 7 Seconds, 45 Grave Aggression,Dr.Know,ETC).
The band called it quits around 88-89. I ended up working for Warner Brothers Records and the rest of the band is still alive and kicking. Maybe I can hook ya up with a copy of our demo for your review. That’s the ONS story in a nutshell…
As a reply to John Smith’s comments on Bob Cox… He didn’t play on the Isolation LP or ANY of the nationally released ONS vinyl recordings. I agree Bob did replace me on drums after the recording of the Isolation LP {you weren’t the only one unhappy with the recording or the label) and did go on to do lot’s of drugs and played in JFA for a minute. But that’s hardly worth mentioning…
Cheers!!! Mando
?
Hell, yeah, I want to hear that demo! That aside, you guys should have been a Mystic band! You’d be hardcore heroes to a bunch of kids who think everyone who put out a record in those days was a genius instead of being virtually unknown. How in the world did you wind up on Rock-o-Rama anyway? I have to admit the first couple times I played the thing I was trying to find some sort of right wing or racist sympathy in the songs until it occurred to me that you were a US Punk band with no particular agenda. Thanks for the background on this thing–I now have one less "mystery record" in the pile!
