Reflecting and considering Wonderwall as gleeful marks who have heard this song wash across the radiowaves hundreds of times over the past 25 years several things need to said.

As popular as Wonderwall became we maintain it is underrated and may just be the most special song Noel ever wrote. Whilst not our stone cold favourite from Noel’s pen it is certainly his most original and enigmatic composition and due something of a re-appraisal. Indulge us dear fellow fan. What we are trying to describe is actually the deft magician’s trick that Noel executed with the most unlikely Oasis single and this is where the real sophistication of Oasis (Noel) lay. We respect the Blur. We respect also the Radiohead. Try as they might and denounce classicist pop songs like Wonderwall as somehow beneath them, the other notable bands of this era with their studied Creeps and Universals must’ve known the game was up on that front when they heard this. They could just about cope with Roll With It. The warning signs were already there and when you ask for something, don't be surprised when you get it. What should’ve and we suspect did worry other songwriters of note was the casual classicism and unmatched boldness and skill of the songwriting. Marred with Liam’s voice and it was over. Following this up with Don’t Look Back In Anger? Ho-ly mo-ly. The game was up. Creeps eventually had to metamorphosis into Kid A’s and Universals into Beetlebums because you simply could not beat Noel Gallagher at this game at this time so why even try? You don’t try stupid, you start playing guitar with a paintbrush and go electronic avant garde because pop songs are beneath you, don’t you understand? Yessir. We here at DFB Towers seen through it. So too did George Martin who knew a thing or two about songwriters.

Admittedly we are as guilty as you, like most fans the over familiarity can often obscure how ground-breaking Wonderwall was. Noel had written catchier, poppier and arguably better singles before this. Don’t be fooled! Frequently denounced more often in the States as a derivative Beatles tribute act – the only thing that strikes me as Beatle-esque on this song is the classicist structure, the mention of ‘backbeat’ and the echo of Lennon in Liam’s voice. None of these things are a negative. What is truly odd however is that it was this particular song that absolutely broke Oasis overground in a ridiculous and era-defining manner in a way no band, no goddamn band has touched since. If they were the indie kids band of choice before the release of this single, even with a number one and a few number twos under their belts, upon the release of this song Oasis were now your milkman’s favourite band, your postman’s favourite band, they were no longer your slightly odd but hip cool cousin’s well kept secret, your parents were now singing along to this weird bloody song blasting out of Atlantic 252 during the morning commute before dropping you off to school at 8:50am on a dreary rainsoaked winter morning.

What we want to say about Wonderwall is to give voice to its absolute uniqueness. Nothing sounds like it. Before or since. We’ve been listening to the Beatles for 20 odd years and they do not sound like this. Where in the hell did Noel Gallagher pull this song from? It’s a beautiful, restrained, stark, bleak, unearthly thing. Imagine sitting down with a bottle of Gordon’s, an acoustic guitar, a capo and writing this. Good God. Noel casts the net and moves beyond beast mode to God-level tier. It straddles a fine line too – is Liam happy, sad, pissed off, what does this all mean? Looking at the artwork on this 12 inch hammers the mystery home. The frankly bizarre, cold cover art by Cannon, the awkward brown border of the familiar logo, the crackle of lightning through the gloom and darkness on the reverse of the sleeve. What a peculiar and remarkable sound. None of this matters because the song means whatever it means directly to you, but it bears making the point because it is important to appreciate, recognise and salute sheer genius when you are in the presence of it and that is what this work of art continues to be. The magicians greatest trick was that somehow out of the 7 singles Oasis released before this – all of which were unashamedly, brashly gunning for absolute mass popular acceptance from the offset – it was with the release of this Wonderwall single, bravely playing against type of the previous 7, this wholly original, strange, introverted, dark, ominous, inscrutable, beautiful little song that our guy Noel, the real goddamn deal if ever there was one, finally, finally succeeds and Oasis become the biggest and most important band in the world.
