For many years, 'Those Mutants' were the dirty little secret of the record collecting community, the divine province of World-wide prog and psych hunters. But with the advent of the 90's CD reissues, this wonderful group of Brazilian "wackos" has been brought to the attention of a whole new wave of listeners, excited at discovering these long lost treasures after 30+ years.
I will echo the sentiments of most reviewers that this album has significantly shifted gears from their first release. Most will find it no better or worse, just different. For those unfamiliar with this band's mat'l, I agree, it would probably be better to start with the first album. If you don't care for that, you will, most likely, not care for this either. But this one is a nice progression on the first. Rather than wear out the interesting sounds and ideas presented there, they decided to build on them, not completely abandoning their approach, but refining it. Don't forget, these traveling minstrels were constantly performing this stuff over and over, so it is easy to see how they might have wanted to progress somewhat. The main thrust this time around is clearly psychedelia. Just hinted at in their first album, they completely embrace it this time around, and to excellent effect. By far, my favorite release by them, this album is just short of stunning, especially considering the monkey on their backs in the form of an oppressive society. It may not be their most user friendly release, but to fans of underground rock, it packs plenty o' punch. This comes recommended to those with open minds
