ORNETTE COLEMAN - Chappaqua Suite LP on Columbia CBS (66203) france
Fantastic 1965 recordings intended for the Conrad Rooks film Chappaqua.
Rooks felt that the music was too beautiful to be soundtrack music, so he used a different score althogether... and indeed this is much more than typical soundtrack music. It was created in an intensely creative period for Coleman. The trio in action here includes Charles Moffett and David Izenson (the same line-up as on the remarkable "Golden Circle" recordings and in the landmark '62 Town Hall concert). Pharoah Sanders sits in on a few tracks as well! On top of that, the whole performance is accompanied by strings, brass and woodwinds. The music fills that gap between the 1962 Town Hall recordings and Skies of America, although the interplay between the trio and the orchestra is much more intense than on SOA. This is a very important work that is sadly very hard to find.
