Using the Model 1.0
Before we continue, you should know how your record player and vinyl work to produce sound. The records have grooves cut into them. In these grooves are microscopic ridges and valleys that correspond to musical signals recorded and cut or pressed into the vinyl. The record player has a diamond stylus that rides in these grooves, picking up vibrations from the undulating ridges and valleys, passing them up the tiny metal cantilever holding the diamond, to a magnet or a copper wire coil that moves mounted in the stylus cartridge. This movement creates an electric signal that is eventually amplified and passed to your speakers.

Microscopic contaminants such as dust, dead skin, oils from the skin, and even the particulate matter in cigarette or cigar smoke fall into these grooves, damaging the delicate vinyl grooves, reducing record life, and fouling and wearing the diamond stylus due to its pressure against the grooves and contaminants.

Now, I used to think that I was taking good care of my vinyl: using a good cleaning solution and an anti-static suede brush on each disc after every second playing; placing vinyl back in the sleeves after cleaning or playing; and doing my best not to manipulate the grooves as much as possible. Basically, I was trying to prolong the life of my treasured vinyl by taking pains to keep debris and body oils out of the grooves.

But oh ho, was I missing the boat!

That is, until I found the Nitty Gritty. The Model 1.0 is a fairly simple device to operate. This most-inexpensive cleaner in the line, this one is fully manual in operation. (For about $200 extra, you can purchase the Model 1.5 which has fully automatic record rotation and cleaning fluid application). First you take the Purifier 2 solution and use a liberal amount on what’s called the “Vac-Sweep” velvet cleaner affixed to the top of the Model 1.0's upper face. This liner is what’s attached to the vacuum. Once you’ve wet the Vac-Sweep liner, you also wet the Record cleaning brush. Then, place a record on the record platter spindle and use the record turner to couple the record to the spindle. You use one hand to turn the spindle as you use the other hand to hold the record cleaning brush against the now-turning record.

This process scrubs the groove with the velvet brushes and the Purifier 2 solution. According to the Nitty Gritty website, the Purifier 2 is the strongest cleaner available for records. It is supposed to be capable of overpowering the most stubborn residue or grease. Again, according to the website, it contains a degreaser, a static neutralizer, a mild detergent, and surfactant. Purifier 2 has a low six parts per million of dissolved solids, making it residue free.
