ORCHESTRATIONS ASTROMANTIC - Rca Direct Master Series - Limited Edition Direct-to-Disc RDCE-6 – Japanese Pressing - ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY STUNNING!
This record is in a class by itself. I dare say, it is the best record I have ever heard of an orchestra, bar none, it making me say, "Yes! Yes! Yes!," every note of the way.
Part of the wonderful Rca direct-to-disc series from Japan, the concept is absolutely stunning and will have you on the edge of your listening chair. What happens here, is Tadaaki Otaka puts the Tokyo Phil in full stride, playing pieces we all love, but only recorded in part, and beautifully -- the dynamics to die for, the definition astounding.
Just listen to the program selections: Side 1 offers a medley comprised of the intro to ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA, TARA'S THEME from "Gone With The Wind," CONCIERTO DE ARANJUEZ (just the second movement), ending with STAR WARS: TITLE THEME & PRINCESS LEIA.
(At an audiophile meeting, we didn't go on to side 2, but played side 1 again … after the standing ovation and applause.)
That said, side 2 isn't slumming, with Suppe's LIGHT CAVALRY, Massenet's THAIS-MEDITATION, and Wagner's PRELUDE to "Die Meistersinger." Darn near leaves you breathless.
An extraordinary demonstration disc, an audiophile project of the highest caliber, that time and again delivers some of the best sound you will ever hear, anywhere, from anyone.
Jacket has minor edge, record within should play NM- to VG+. (Two light marks will prove of little concern.)

Shipping and handling is $5 for up to 5 LPs shipped within the States. Internationally, $15 via airmail for the first LP, $3 each thereafter. (Canada is half that.) Boxes over 4 lbs., add another $6, because First Class is no longer available at that weight, just Priority Mail. Note, too, boxed sets of LPs require more postage.
