Description
How rare is this? Omega Red Star's solitary UK Decca LP, From Hungary, in glorious mono from late 1968. And what's more, this example is in remarkable condition, having hardly been played.
If you are unfamiliar with this rare mind-expanding* LP, here's what David Wells has to say in Galactic Ramble: "A rare collection of Western-style psychedelic pop, recorded when this Hungarian band visited London, apparently at the invitation of the Spencer Davis Group. There's organ and fuzz guitar throughout, with highlights including the hard-rocking 'There's Nothing I Can Do', schizophrenic 'Tomorrow' (with droning verses and an up-tempo freakout chorus, also featuring the Eastern European sitar equivalent, the citero) and the beautiful, dreamy popsike 'The Clown' (with atmospheric flute and acoustic guitar)."
Sadly DW's appreciative appraisal appeared nearly fifty years too late to do the band any good.
The album came out in December of 1968, so any reviews in the music press at the time would have been published in early 1969, just before Genesis released their debut. Very few copies were sold, and (like From Genesis to Revelation) very, very few of these would have been in mono in '69, when the whole world was grooving in stereo.
This, therefore, is a rare opportunity to add this unique album to your collection, particularly in much rarer mono, as well as in such lovely condition as this.
The red Decca labels look perfect with no unwanted writing, no sticker tears, no rubbing or residue and no spindle wear, with only the wispiest of spindle marks discernible when viewed under strong halogen lighting, revealing minimal play over the years.
Both sides of the disc, which features 1A/1A matrices and 1/1 mother stampers, also look near perfect, with only a couple of the lightest hairlines visible when examined under bright light. It is obvious this disc has been very little played and extremely well cared for over the years. It plays beautifully from beginning to end, both sides, with no skips or jumps, and easily warrants a grade of EX.
The front laminated cover (also EX) is a dedicated mono sleeve (no joint mono/stereo peephole here) and is extremely well preserved with fine razor-straight edges and a remarkably clean unlaminated rear panel, with no unwanted unsightly writing, rubbing, tears or sticker damage.
The lovely slab of vinyl is housed in its original poly-lined Decca inner bag, correctly dated 11-68 (presumably plucked from the latest available batch held at the factory).
Everything in this package, therefore, is present and correct, just as it would have left the pressing plant at the tail-end of 1968.
