Given that 'Aureate Gloom' contains a song entitled 'Cthonian Dirge For Uruk The Other', it's clear that Kevin Barnes' Of Montreal have not strayed too far from the Byzantine avant-pop that they've beome cherished for in their nineteen-year existence. Indeed, 'Aureate Gloom' is replete with both Barnes' trademark genre-spanning, glam-tinged melodic suss and his reckless spirit of adventure. Although the gloom in the title is very real in this case - this album was precipitated by dark times in Barnes' own private life - the direct emotional nature of these songs only help to contribute to a re-affirmation of Of Montreal's status as a glittering star in the stranger reaches of the indie firmament.
