THE LOGO FOR DEFINITELY MAYBE WAS IN FACT HANDWRITTEN BY OASIS ART DIRECTOR BRIAN CANNON'S OWN HAND. MANY ATTEMPTS WERE MADE BEFORE THE FINAL VERSION WAS COMPLETED. THE WRITING ON THE FINISHED PRODUCT WAS A COMPOSITE OF 4 SEPARATE PIECES. THE 'D' 'EFINITELY' THE 'M' AND 'AYBE'. THIS PRINT IS SCANNED PROFESSIONALLY FROM THE ORIGINAL 1994 ARTWORK, MASKING TAPE CAN BE SEEN ADJOINING THE TWO SHEETS THAT MAKE UP THIS PIECE, THE FINISHED ARTICLE CLEARLY VISIBLE ACROSS THE TOP. THIS PIECE WAS THEN TURNED INTO FILM FOR EXPOSURE OF PRINTING PLATES BY THE REPROGRAPHICS HOUSE.

Brian Cannon, the man behind some of the most iconic sleeve designs in the history of British music. Over the past two decades, Brian’s company Microdot has worked with bands such as The Verve, Suede, Insprial Carpets, Super Furry Animals and, of course, Oasis. After training as a graphic designer, Brian set up Microdot in 1990 and first came to prominence working with The Verve. Sleeve designs such as those for singles She’s A Superstar, Gravity Grave and the band’s debut album A Storm In Heaven are still regarded as some of the most innovative and original of the last two decades. The company eclipsed their own early success however with their work with Oasis in the mid-nineties. From the iconic white on black Oasis logo to every single and album sleeve until 1998, Microdot’s designs were seen as a fitting visual companion to the band’s music, often referencing both the songs themselves and giving a nod to band’s own influences. Brian is a central figure in Oasis history not just for his work with Microdot but as a friend of the band, he often made appearances on record and is one of the few ‘eye witnesses’ to the band’s early success. BRIAN CANNON ON HOW HE CAME TO WORK WITH OASIS...
I took my mother to Rome for her 60th birthday. Whilst there, I bought a pair of Adidas squash trainers – not that I’ve ever played squash – which you couldn’t get in England. Later, I was in the lift in the building in Manchester where I had my office, and this guy got in. The first thing he said to me was, “Where the f**k did you get them trainers?” That was how I met Noel Gallagher. We got chatting and I told him about the work I’d done for The Verve. As the lift door opened he went, “Right, I’m in a band; we’re going to get signed soon. I want you to do the artwork.” THE REST AS THEY SAY IS HISTORY....
