Late in 1948, Norman Granz entered into an agreement with Mercury Records to produce and distribute the JATP sessions … plus a new series of studio recordings. The first of these new recordings was The Jazz Scene, a deluxe limited edition & numbered set of six 12" 78 rpm albums.  Including the following artists:

The Jazz Scene was a special limited edition compilation produced by Granz, who was also the founder of the Clef/Norgran/Verve family of labels. The original release consisted of just 5000 sets of 78 rpm records, and they were numbered and signed by Granz.

THE “JAZZ SCENE” IS, IN MY OPINION, THE ONE OF THE GREATEST JAZZ COLLECTIBLES EVER PRODUCED.

ISSUED IN 1949 IN A SIGNED EDITION OF 5,000 BY NORMAN GRANZ, IT IS A HARDBOUND-CLOTH COVERED BOOK (12 1/2" X 15") WITH A NOTEBOOK-TYPE BINDING ALLOWING THE OWNER TO REMOVE OR REARRANGE THE CONTENTS. INSIDE THE CLOTH BINDING ARE SIX 12" 78 RPM DISCS, 28 HIGH QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS OF THE JAZZ STARS OF THE DAY (1949) BY NOTED PHOTOGRAPHER GJON MILI … EACH PHOTOGRAPH IS 11 1/2" X 12 1/2" COULD BE REMOVED (if desired) TO BE FRAMED, A UNIQUE DRAWING BY DAVID STONE MARTIN, AND AN ESSAY ON EACH PERFORMING ARTIST BY NORMAN GRANZ.

This was NORMAN GRANZ’s pet project and masterpiece recording.  Encased in a black portfolio album. The six records (condition listed below) are in individual envelope covers, spiral bound into the portfolio album, and slotted in between the RARE booklet [Folio size] of photography of the biggest names in JAZZ.

NORMAN GRANZ Produced this enterprise with his own money, and issued it in a LIMITED EDITION of 5000 copies, all SIGNED by him. This copy is number 3733. The six records are issued on the MERCURY Label. [1] DUKE ELLINGTON [2] NEAL HEFTI/CHARLIE PARKER [3] COLEMAN HAWKINS/LESTER YOUNG [4] RALPH BURNS/GEORGE HANDY [5] CHARLIE PARKER/WILLIE SMITH [6] MACHITO/BUD POWELL.

ALL RECORDS ARE VG+ TO NEAR MINT...THEY HAVE NOT SEEN A LOT OF PLAY.  A FEW LIGHT SCUFFS (FROM THE HEAVY PAPER SLEEVES) OR LIGHT SCRATCHES/MARKS HERE AND THERE … A FEW DISCS LOOK CLOSE TO UNPLAYED.   

PHOTOGRAPHY IS BY GJON MILI.  Except for photo of Ralph Burns which is by Harold Trudeau, and photo of Bud Powell, which is by Paul Nodler. Original double page illustration by DAVID STONE MARTIN.  VERY FINE CONDITION THROUGHOUT.  Amazing presentation ... They don't make 'em like this anymore.

No writing (except for signature), no tears, rips … the metal binding is free of any rust (not a speck); the cloth bound book is in exceptional condition for its age.  Just some very slight shelfware or paper fading (light browning).  Incredible shape for a piece that is 56 years old.  See pictures below.

Check out our auction for an amazing jazz Photography book by the great William Claxton.  Fantastic and impossible-to-find (especially in this condition) German hard-bounded (9.5 x 11.8) book from 1961 called JAZZLIFE.  Black cloth hard cover with gold lettering ... would make a great set with the Jazz Scene!

Look for, in the coming days, two RARE 78 RPM sets from Lester Young from 1943 and a set from Dizzy Gillespie that was NEVER distributed or sold due to legal issues!  Ultra RARE!  Thanks for looking!
