I New Trolls sono uno dei più noti gruppi musicali della scena del rock progressivo italiano degli anni settanta. Fra le loro opere si trovano alcune delle pietre miliari del genere, come il celebre Concerto grosso per i New Trolls. Alla fine degli anni settanta la produzione del gruppo si è orientata verso sonorità più pop-rock, pur mantenendo alcune delle caratteristiche distintive del progressive come gli arrangiamenti molto elaborati, il virtuosismo tecnico delle esecuzioni ed i cantati polifonici molto strutturati (spesso paragonati a quelli di brani dei Queen come Bohemian Rhapsody). La prima formazione del gruppo, nota semplicemente come Trolls, nacque a Genova nel 1966 da un'idea di Pino Scarpettini (tastiere) e Vittorio De Scalzi (voce e chitarra). Nel gruppo comparivano anche Ugo Guido (voce e basso), Giulio Menin (batteria) e Piero Darini (chitarra e voce). Col nome "I Trolls" il gruppo incise, per l'etichetta La voce del padrone, il 45 giri Dietro la nebbia (lato B Questa sera). Seguirono, sempre nel 1966, Cherish e Il mondo che vuoi e altre cover ma con una diversa formazione e senza De Scalzi. Nel 1967 il gruppo cambiò nome in "New Trolls", con una nuova formazione: Vittorio De Scalzi (voce e chitarra), Nico Di Palo (voce e chitarra), Giorgio D'Adamo (basso), Mauro Chiarugi (tastiere) e Gianni Belleno (batteria e cori). Secondo una leggenda (smentita da De Scalzi), questa formazione fu scelta sulla base di un articolo pubblicato su un giornale genovese, in cui un critico musicale aveva elencato i migliori musicisti della città. È invece noto che la scelta di questa formazione avvenne in seguito a numerose vicissitudini; in un primo tempo dovevano appartenere al gruppo anche Renato Rosset (sostituito da Chiarugi) e Sergio Blandini (sostituito da Di Palo). Il 1971 fu un momento di svolta importante per il gruppo. Dopo aver partecipato nuovamente al Festival di Sanremo (con una cover del brano Una storia di Sergio Endrigo), il gruppo incise quello che molti critici considerano il loro capolavoro: Concerto grosso per i New Trolls. L'album è caratterizzato da sonorità ormai pienamente progressive, che uniscono elementi di musica classica a passaggi che ricordano le grandi band del progressive britannico dell'epoca (per esempio Jethro Tull e King Crimson). Il materiale di Concerto grosso fu scritto da Luis Bacalov, e la realizzazione dell'album vide la partecipazione di Maurizio Salvi. Nel 1972, D'Adamo abbandonò il gruppo, sostituito da Frank Laugelli. Anche Maurizio Salvi divenne in questo periodo membro stabile dei New Trolls. Nel 1972, con questa formazione il gruppo pubblicò due album: Searching for a land e Ut. Seguirono alcuni anni in cui i membri del gruppo, per alcune divergenze sorte durante la registrazione di Ut, si dedicarono ad alcuni progetti paralleli: Di Palo, Laugelli, Salvi e Belleno pubblicarono l'album Canti d'innocenza canti d'esperienza, mentre De Scalzi e D'Adamo diedero vita ai New Trolls Atomic System con Tullio De Piscopo alla batteria, Renato Rosset alle tastiere, Giorgio Baiocco ai fiati, Ramasandiran Somusundaran alle percussioni, incidendo due album. In questo periodo inoltre De Scalzi si dedica all'attività discografica, fondando l'etichetta Magma, con sede a Genova e distribuzione curata dalla Dischi Ricordi. Di Palo forma poi gli Ibis, con cui pubblica due album. Dopo Aldebaran, lo stile dei New Trolls andò via via perdendo gli ultimi elementi progressive, a favore di uno stile più legato alla musica pop-rock, seppure caratterizzato da composizioni ed esecuzioni sempre molto sofisticate. L'album New Trolls del 1979 risente dell'influenza dei Bee Gees (in canzoni come Che idea), ma riprende anche sonorità del passato in brani come Ok! (fiamme sul Pacifico) e Domenica di Napoli (con il testo scritto da Lucio Dalla e con un'introduzione musicale di Ricky Belloni ricavata da un inciso contenuto nella canzone Un cavallo, un amore dell'album Sacrificio dell'Equipe 84). Nel 1980 il gruppo pubblicò il 45 giri Musica, un brano rock, con una cover di Poster di Claudio Baglioni sul lato B; fu l'ultima incisione dei New Trolls con Giorgio Usai. Anche il 1981 fu segnato da un singolo di successo, Là nella casa dell'angelo (con un lato B, Il treno, caratterizzato dal virtuosismo chitarristico di Di Palo); a questa incisione seguì un nuovo e definitivo abbandono di D'Adamo. I New Trolls, ormai rimasti un quartetto, proseguirono la loro produzione discografica con gli album FS (1981, un concept album sul tema del viaggio) e America O.K. (1983 (con la collaborazione di Mogol). Nel 1991, senza Di Palo che aveva intrapreso un tour solista accompagnato da turnisti, il gruppo collaborò con Anna Oxa, scrivendo per lei i brani dell'album Tutti i brividi del mondo e accompagnandola in un tour durante il quale furono registrati i brani per un album live. In seguito, Belleno decise di abbandonare il gruppo e continuare a lavorare con Oxa. Nel 1992 lo sostituì Alfio Vitanza (ex Latte e miele). Con il nuovo batterista, il rientro di Di Palo ed il ritorno di Usai, i New Trolls si esibirono ancora al Festival di Sanremo con Quelli come noi (1992), pubblicando il cd omonimo dove, oltre alla canzone sanremese vi sono reincisioni di vecchi brani.

UT è il loro quinto album in studio. Dopo l'inaspettato insuccesso commerciale del precedente Searching for a land, i cui testi erano in lingua inglese, i New Trolls tornano all'italiano stigmatizzando le proprie scelte passate. Questo si può notare da diversi indizi:

• Il titolo Ut fa riferimento alla prima nota musicale, ma anche a una congiunzione del latino, lingua da cui sarebbe nato l'italiano

• Le fotografie dei componenti sono "appese" come se si trattasse di foto segnaletiche: un ulteriore indizio della loro "colpa"

• La fortificazione simboleggia la "difesa" della lingua italiana

• La citazione dal Convivio di Dante Alighieri rende esplicita la critica: "A perpetuale infamia e depressione delli malvagi uomini d'Italia, che commèndano lo volgare altrui e lo proprio dispregiano, dico che la loro mossa viene da cinque abominevoli cagioni. La prima è cechitade di discrezione; la seconda maliziata escusazione; la terza cupidità di vanagloria; la quarta, argomento d'invidia; la quinta ed ultima, viltà d'animo, cioè pusillanimità".

A ciò va aggiunta una vera e propria "epurazione" ai danni di Vittorio De Scalzi, promotore delle scelte artistiche di Searching for a land, presente soltanto in una delle 8 canzoni di Ut. Si tratta quindi de facto del primo album della formazione che inciderà Canti d'innocenza canti d'esperienza e porterà poi alla formazione degli Ibis. L'album presenta un ritorno allo stile più vicino ai New Trolls pre-Concerto Grosso e Searching for a land, fatto di riferimenti (più o meno evidenti) alle proposte anglo-americane, ma rivisitate "alla New Trolls". Le canzoni quindi presentano ciascuna uno stile musicale diverso, che ha come punto di forza la caratteristica voce di Nico Di Palo, alla quale fa da contraltare il falsetto di Gianni Belleno, presente in versione solista in "Storia di una foglia" e nella parte centrale di "C'è troppa guerra". Indubbiamente la scelta di tornare alla lingua italiana riesce a creare un confine più marcato, rispetto alle "contaminazioni" straniere, decretando un parziale ritorno al successo di pubblico e di vendite, anche se nell'estate del 1973 il gruppo si sfalderà a causa dell'inizio di una serie di interminabili vicende legali, incentrate sulla proprietà del nome "New Trolls".

The New Trolls are one of the most popular bands of the Italian progressive rock scene of the seventies. Among their works are some of the milestones of the genre, such as the famous Concerto grosso for the New Trolls. In the late seventies, the group's sound was more pop-oriented rock, while retaining some of the distinguishing features of the progressive as the elaborate arrangements, the technical virtuosity of the performances and songs polyphonic highly structured (often compared to those of Queen songs like Bohemian Rhapsody). The first training group, known simply as Trolls, was born in Genoa in 1966 from an idea by Pino Scarpettini (keyboards) and Vittorio De Scalzi (guitar and vocals). The group also appeared Ugo Guido (bass and vocals), Julie Menin (drums) and Piero Darini (guitar and vocals). Under the name "trolls" the group recorded for the label The master's voice, 45 laps behind the fog (B-side this evening). The 1971 was an important turning point for the group. After taking part again in the Sanremo Festival (with a cover of the song is a story of Blanche Dubois), the band recorded what many critics consider their masterpiece: Concerto grosso for New Trolls. The album features sounds now fully progressive, combining elements of classical music passages that recall the great British bands of the progressive era (such as Jethro Tull and King Crimson). Concerto grosso material was written by Luis Bacalov, and the album was attended by Maurizio Salvi. In 1972, D'Adamo left the band, replaced by Frank Laugelli. Maurizio Salvi was also during this time a permanent member of the New Trolls. In 1972, with this lineup the band released two albums: Searching for a land and Ut. The next few years in which members of the group, some differences arose during the recording of Ut, devoted to some side projects: Di Palo, Laugelli, Salvi Belleno and released the album Songs of innocence, songs of experience, while De Scalzi and D'Adamo gave birth to New Trolls Atomic System with Tullio De Piscopo on drums, Renato Rosset on keyboards, George Baiocco on horns, Ramasandiran Somusundaran on percussion, recording two albums. In this period De Scalzi also go on to record, the label founded Magma, based in Genoa and distribution Discs edited by Ricordi. Palo form then the Ibis, which released two albums. After Aldebaran, the style of New Trolls went gradually losing the last few progressive elements in favor of a style more related to pop-rock, although characterized by increasingly sophisticated compositions and performances. In 1980 the band released the 45 music, a rock song, with a cover of Poster Claudio Baglioni on the B side, was the last recording with the New Trolls Giorgio Usai. Although 1981 was marked by a single success, the angel in the house (with a B-side, The train, which is characterized by the guitar virtuosity of Di Palo), this incision was followed by a new and final abandonment of D'Adamo. I New Trolls, now remained a quartet continued their discography with albums FS (1981, a concept album about the journey) and America OK (1983 (in collaboration with Mogol). UT is their fifth studio album. After the unexpected commercial failure of the previous Searching for a land, whose lyrics were in English, the New Trolls return to Italian condemning their past choices. This can be seen from several clues:

Ut • The title refers to the first note of music, but also a conjunction of the Latin language which was born to Italian

• Photographs of the components are "hung" as if they were mug shots: a further indication of their "guilt"

• The fort symbolizes the "defense" of the Italian language

• The quote from the Convivio of Dante Alighieri makes explicit the criticism: "A perpetual shame and depression of the wicked men of Italy, who commended the vulgar and just despise others, say that their move is abominable for five reasons.
