Rare original 1967 UK blue & black Columbia label 11-track MONO LP with stunning front laminated flipback picture sleeve and original EMI advert inner. This copy is in superb condition!
The matrix numbers are :
XAX 3419-2 On Side One
XAX 3420-1 On Side Two
Mother stampers are 1 O, 1 O, consistent with a 1st issue mono NO File Under Popular sleeve.
This first pressing in superb condition and has obviously been carefully looked after for the last fifty three years.
The album was released on August 5, 1967 and one month later it was released in stereo. The mono mixes of each track were done at seperate sessions, and subtle changes in effect abound, moment to moment gradations that can alter the flow of an entire track. For example, Syd Barrett’s whoops and shouts on 'Take up thy Stethoscope and Walk' are simply dripping with delay and the environment constantly morphs, unlike the stereo version which is 'fixed'. The coda of 'Flaming' is shorter than on the stereo version, as is 'The Gnome'. There's a whole layer of organ missing on the stereo mix at the start of 'Interstellar Overdrive' with a bongo fadeout and seriously different parts in 'Pow R Toch H'. As the engineer said many years later 'The omission of things in the stereo mixes was really just because of the time - or lack of it - spent over these' - Mono was the de-facto standard & the stereo, like 'Sgt Pepper', was pretty much cobbled together as an afterthought.
Condition
The Disc :
The overall condition is fantastic. The vinyl has a just pressed deep sheen. There are no scratches or scuffs and very few hairline marks are visible on very close inspection.
Labels:
The labels are clean & bright with the KT tax code clearly visible & hardly any light spindle marks around the centre hole as evidence of very little play.
The Sleeve :
The sleeve is fantastic with negligible scuffing to the edges, and bright clear laminate with little sign of shelfwear.
The sleeve back has NO 'File Under Popular: Pop Groups' text. It is clean and unscuffed with just very light jangling staining.
This truly is a superb and complete original set rarely available in such great condition.
