New Order’s debut album “Movement,” released in 1981, marked a significant transition for the band following the tragic death of Joy Division’s lead singer, Ian Curtis. The album showcased a shift towards a more synthesized sound while retaining the dark, post-punk roots of Joy Division. “Movement” is noted for its melancholic mood and the continuation of the band’s exploration into electronic music, which would become a defining characteristic of New Order’s later work. The album cover, designed by Peter Saville, is based on a poster by Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero. The design features lines that create the shape of an ‘F’ and an ‘L,’ representing Factory Records and the Roman numeral for 50, as “Movement” was cataloged as FACT 50 in Factory Records’ discography. Upon its release, “Movement” received mixed reviews, with some critics feeling that it lacked the forward momentum expected after the single “Ceremony.” The band members themselves expressed mixed feelings about the album, particularly regarding its production.
