Neil Young PRAIRIE WIND Classic Records SIX LP 45 RPM Test Pressing - SEALED and near mint! This is #8 of 20 copies pressed on SIX single sided Clarity Vinyl LPs (clear/transluscent vinyl; please see below for more about this). The title was planned as a 45 rpm edition, but never released by Classic. A must have for Neil fanatics, with sound and music a 10 (at least!), and unquestionably the finest version of this gorgeous record you're ever likely to hear.
Condition: The outer box has a crease/dent in the corner, as can be seen in picture #3. Unfortunately, that's how it arrived when I bought it. The good news is it looks like the outer box was creased before they sealed it, and the flaw was not created during shipping.
ABOUT THE MUSIC Here's an excerpt from a 2005 review of the "official" Classic two LP edition, written by Michael Fremer at Analog Planet (website www.analogplanet.com - check him out if you want the gospel on great sounding records!):
"Written and recorded with short-order speed, some of it before and some after Young’s brain surgery, the album has been brilliantly produced, arranged and recorded all-analog.
The sound on this set is absolutely superb: warm, spacious, organic and full-bodied. The instrumental layering is stunningly rendered, with Ben Keith’s pedal steel way back in space, adding those “lonesome train whistle”-like accents. Because it was recorded live, the soundstage has a three-dimensional coherence and weight rare in rock and almost non-existent in contemporary recordings."
ABOUT 45 RPM PRESSINGS While some folks don't like the 45 RPM format (yes, you do have to get up and change sides more often), it's not hype: with more vinyl real estate for your stylus to operate within, volume levels are maintained consistently across all tracks (with 33 1/3, as you get closer to the inner groove you will lose volume because the grooves get smaller), and there's LOTS more room for the bass frequencies. A mastering engineer has to juggle all these factors, usually leading to certain compromises, when pressing at 33 1/3. The common wisdom in the audiophile community is that, when done well, 45 rpm pressings are as close as you'll get to the master tape.
ABOUT SINGLE SIDED PRESSINGS While pressing at 45 RPM raises the sonic bar, one might still confront the sonic compromises introduced when an LP is pressed on both sides, which is the norm. When records are issued on very thin vinyl, the grooves pressed on one side of an lp can microscopically impress themselves on the other side of the record, introducing unwanted audio artifacts. This is why audiophile labels favor 180 gram or heavier vinyl. Consequently, Classic Records reissued certain titles on SINGLE SIDED pressings, at 45 RPM, in order to produce THE most accurate rendition of the master tape possible.
ABOUT CLARITY VINYL -- Clarity Vinyl represents the ultimate in vinyl formulations because it is comprised of over 90 percent of the highest quality co-polymer available – a key component in vinyl pellets used for manufacturing vinyl records. Further, Clarity Vinyl has no carbon black additive, common in vinyl formulas for LPs. Carbon black contains trace metals that become magnetized and cause tiny electrical distortions in cartridges during playback that smears the sound. By taking out the Carbon Black, Clarity Vinyl is able to dramatically reduce the "electrical distortions" and thus bring more "Clarity" to the playback process, providing a more realistic musical experience to the listener and LP enthusiast.
ABOUT TEST PRESSINGS These highly collectible test pressings are from the first stamper. Test pressings reflect the closest you can get to the lacquers. Only a very small number of these unreleased sets exist. This set is packaged in a white special edition box and each test pressing comes in a white jacket. The original jacket cover is included as a bonus.
