Description

NORTHERN SOUL RARITY TANGEERS ACETATE!   Here is a chance to own a unique version of one of Northern’s top wants. The Tan Geers’ Let My Heart & Soul Be Free/What’s The Use Of Me Trying is a recognized monster in its original Okeh pressing. Demos are rare enough, stock rarer, but here we have an original two-sided 1967 acetate from the Baltimore recording studio that produced the disc!
The acetate is in excellent condition – apart for a couple of minor paper scuffs, there are very few marks on either playing surface. The generic Audiodisc label has handwritten titles – interesting that the group name is spelled “Tangiers”, and Let My Heart & Soul Be Free is listed under its original title “It’s All Over Town”. The sleeve for the disc has a rubber stamp from the recording studio: Bradley Recording Company, 531 N. Howard Street, Baltimore, Maryland.
Both songs are the same mix/version as the original Okeh release. The disc plays well, one or two pops and crackles but is otherwise remarkably clean so I would grade it as VG+++. One thing it doesn’t have is the high-end distortion that you hear on the regular “styrene” pressing. As was the common practice back in the 1960s, the acetate was likely cut at the studio direct from the master tape for the producers to hear, once completed.
This item was acquired from a record industry insider many years ago, and is an authentic 60s piece, not a “re-cut” or a phony disc. Please bid sensibly for a unique piece of Northern Soul history!!
