COVER:        VG+ (some light age wear, the corners are all in good shape, the outer cloth style cover itself is in nice shape with no tears, the inner foundation is still in nice shape, the picture and all inner items still wholly connected, the back sides of a few of the pictures have some spotting, the back of the Ellington picture has some mystery black finish that did not come from the Bird picture next to it. The Pictures are well represented in the 9 that I included in the listing, some have a slight bend to the bottom left hand corner, but for the most part are in great shape, the David Stone Martin drawing at the front of the set is in great shape, there is some browning from oxygen to the paper that sits between the disc sleeves)

This famous 78rpm album, released in 1949, definitely was the product of “Norman Granz' dream”.

The album consists of 12 tracks of various styles, from great mainstream sessions such as Lester Young Trio and Willie Smith Quintet; Duke Ellington's small combo session with strings; Neal Hefti's huge orchestra with Charlie Parker's alto sax overdubbed; Coleman Hawkins's magnificent tenor solo; Machito's latin ensemble; Charlie Parker's awesome quartet session; Bud Powell Trio's yet another fine performance; to avant-garde/abstract big-band by Ralph Burns, George Handy...

What makes this album so special (as well as superb quality of every performance) is the well-manufactured cloth-bound album itself, and dozen of great b/w photographs by Gjon Mili. This album itself surely represents what the Jazz scene was like in the 1940s, from Norman Granz' own perspective.
