Released in December 1985 on Cogumelo Records, Século XX is one-half of the most important split LP in the history of South American metal. While their split-mates, Sepultura, were delivering the primitive death-thrash of Bestial Devastation, Overdose provided a more traditional, yet equally potent, dose of heavy metal. As the very first release from the legendary Belo Horizonte label (Catalog #COG.001), this record effectively launched the "Mineiro" metal explosion that would eventually dominate the global underground.
Musically, Século XX captured a band in transition. Unlike the raw, chaotic blasphemy of Sarcófago or early Sepultura, Overdose—led by the distinct, gravelly vocals of Pedro "Bozó" Amorim—favored a style closer to the Power/Thrash of the era. The tracks "Anjos do Apocalipse" and the title track "Século XX" are masterclasses in mid-80s steel, featuring melodic twin-guitar harmonies from Cláudio David and Ricardo Souza that hinted at the progressive complexity the band would explore on later albums like Conscience....
Though often overshadowed by Sepultura's meteoric rise, Overdose was arguably the more "mature" band at the time of the recording. They were the elder statesmen of the Belo Horizonte scene, and their inclusion on this split gave the young Sepultura the platform they needed to conquer the world. For collectors, the original 1985 pressing with red labels remains a "Holy Grail," representing the raw, unpolished birth of a genre that was forged in the garages of Minas Gerais.
