Description

NIRVANA "THE STORY OF SIMON SIMOPATH" Original 1967 U.S. stereo LP (Bell) 6015-S. M-/M. RARE pressing of great debut LP by Patrick Campbell-Lyons & Alex Spyropoulos. 10 Pop Psychedelic tracks involving the Sci-Fi tale of young space traveller Simon Simopath. Often hailed as the first Rock Opera. Produced by Chris Blackwell.

The British psychedelic group Nirvana was actually the unlikely duo of Irishman Patrick Campbell-Lyons & Greek Alex Spyropoulos. They were the first rock act signed to Island Records, which had been releasing Jamaican Bluebeat & Ska records up until that time. Their first album “The Story Of Simon Simopath” was released in 1967 & is often cited as the first rock opera preceding “Tommy” by two years. It contained many good songs such as “Satellite Jockey", "We Can Help You” & “Pentecost Hotel” with their sound being somewhat akin to the post “Revolver” Paul McCartney- although John Lennon is also an influence on the more up-tempo material. Reviews were excellent & all was going well except for one thing- Nirvana was not a touring band. There had been a few showcase gigs utilizing outside musicians recruited specifically for those shows but they never actually “went on the road”. Nevertheless, recording commenced for their second LP "All Of Us" in 1968. It produced the hit "Rainbow Chaser"- one of the first songs to use the "phasing" technique (similar to "Itchykoo Park" by the Small Faces). After recording a third album, tentatively titled "Black Flower", Chris Blackwell rejected the LP & dropped the group from the Island roster. That album, which became known as “Dedicated To Markos” marked the final pairing of the duo although Patrick Campbell-Lyons has used the name Nirvana many times over the ensuing years. This pressing of "The Story Of Simon Simopath" is the hard to find original U.S. issue from 1967 on Bell Records- a short term arrangement with Chris Blackwell which also included the first records by Spooky Tooth.

Side 1 1. Wings Of Love 2. Lonely Boy 3. We Can Help You 4. Satellite Jockey 5. In The Courtyard Of The Stars
Side 2 1. You Are Just The One 2. Pentecost Hotel 3. I Never Had A Love Like This Before 4. Take This Hand 5. 1999

Cover looks great w/no writing or tears & displays very well. The only flaws are a very small cut-out hole in the upper right & barely noticeable corner wear. MINT record w/blue Bell Records labels has no scratches or scuffs looks nearly new & has received very few plays.
