Description
Hired to Dave Grohl (drums Warren, Ohio), the trio signed with the major label Geffen and, in September 1991, public Nevermind. Produced by Butch Vig and mixed by Andy Wallace, it is a disc intended to come right in the classics of all time.
Few albums in rock history, have in fact been able to incarnate with the same intensity the moods and anxieties of an entire generation. Yet Kurt Cobain, following finalization of records, was not satisfied.
Not forgive Gary Gersh and Andy Wallace, respectively, and record producer, he wanted to get their hands on the material, accentuating the dynamic and depth, and smussandone corners. He was making a colossal mistake. Right balance, in fact, is the secret of this work, able to mix with the right proportions and hard-rock tune, sharpness of sound and clarity of the arrangements, iconoclastic punk fury and existential melancholy. The peculiarities of Nirvana is to know how to associate with the nihilistic sarcasm punk melodic an unknown talent to a large part of the formations that emerge during the same period. And then there are the lyrics: a perfect fusion of music and life, able to create a mythical symbiosis between artist and audience that reaches its climax in "Smell Like Teen Spirit", the angry cry that opens the work and will remain in annals to symbolize the spirit, apathetic and sarcastic, of an entire generation (it also will revisit in an interesting version of "sensual" Tori Amos).
Renouncing in part to the hardness of the previous "Bleach", Cobain gives vent to his demons in a series of ballads neurotic, that closely resemble those of his great teacher, Neil Young. Hearing is believing pieces like "In Bloom," "Lithium" and "On A Plain", which give the disc a tormented force. But to conquer the audience are also the autobiographical "Come As You Are", the acoustic lament of "Polly", the whisper moribund "Something In The Way". The album (nearly 10 million copies sold, against 30 thousand onset) will become one of the biggest hit records of all time, however, to Nirvana without alienating the sympathies of the most "hard and pure fringes" of their audience. The scream of Cobain, almost detached, but at the same time alive and poignant, soon became one of the most powerful symbols of the century rock. And the Seattle music brings to light another America, populated by young and restless misfits who, underground, suddenly surging to social phenomena.
