Since their inception in 1981, Metallica have gone from an underground heavy-metal band to one of the most successful acts in the world, with an intensely loyal if not rabid fanbase. Metallica Like You've Never Heard Them Before!  Half-Speed Mastered from the Original Analog Tapes at Mobile Fidelity!
Metallica's fourth studio album was the thrash metal band's commercial breakthrough. 1998's …And Justice For All was the group's first album to reach the Top 10 (No. 6), first to earn a Top 40 hit single ("One"), first to receive a Grammy nomination (in fact, in the first year for the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance category), first to win a Grammy (two years later for "One") and first to spin off a music video. For many music fans, their first exposure to Metallica was that video for "One," which in 1999 was voted among MTV's Top 100 Videos Of All Time. The group's first studio album since the death of bassist Cliff Burton, …And Justice For All went platinum within nine weeks and today is certified eight times platinum in the U.S., making the album Metallica's second biggest seller, bested only by the self-titled album that followed.
"Having already established themselves as the streetwise saviors of heavy metal's oft-tainted legacy in the '80s, Metallica rebounded from the accidental death of original bassist Cliff Burton to produce their most thematically challenging, musically accomplished album to date. Despite James Hetfield's dank, extended portraits of a world collapsing from corruption and decadence--themes that virtually guaranteed it little radio or television exposure--the album was nonetheless a muscular commercial success. Even "One," its complex, seven-and-a-half-minute adaptation of Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun," managed to scale the singles charts. Other highlights include "Blackened," "Eye of the Beholder," and the sweeping "To Live Is to Die," tracks that underscore a sense of musical ambition that's often downright prog-centric, yet never merely self-indulgent." --Jerry McCulley

"Essential album + amazing sound = Decisions don't come any easier. These 180-gram 45rpm LPs take their place as the best-sounding classic metal albums around and will cause even the most (justifiably) jaded fan to forgive the band for its mainstream ways during the better part of the past 18 years. Yes, these pressings are that good." – Playback, June 2008
"…even listeners that know these platters back-to-front are in for a shock not dissimilar to the surprise they received when the Bay Area group went soft in the 90s. Only, unlike the latter, this transformation is welcome. Instrumental detail, body, and presence are  jaw-droppingly grand. Soundstage dimensions are super-quiet. And the previously inhibiting compression has been lifted."  – Bob Gendron, The Absolute Sound, August 2008
