Randy Newman's contribution to the culture of Tinsel Town can't be understated. Composing incidental music for television in the 1960s, within two decades he was a go-to for movie scores, while solo pop hits include the inimitable ode to the United States' sprawling second city, 'I Love LA' (which would feature in movies such as Down and Out in Beverly Hills, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, Bean and Volcano). That song, in reality, is as sardonic and ironic as anything he has ever written - which is saying something, considering sharp wry wit runs through so many of his lyrics. All of which meant his most notable contribution to the first Toy Story movie - 'You've Got A Friend In Me' - was almost jarringly sweet and up front. Now here we are, five films into the franchise, and it's still impossible to imagine anyone other than Newman being tasked with the original score.
