The Remastering

The LPs were cut, from a 30 ips compiled analog master overseen by Neil himself, at Bernie Grundman Mastering. This release was anticipated by hundreds upon hundreds of our customers and now we can tell you with unbridled enthusiasm, this release is bar-none, the finest sounding Neil Young record ever pressed!

Tracks one through 14 were all originally recorded on analog multi-track magnetic tape in formats ranging from one-inch eight track to two-inch 24 track. In each case, after the recording process was completed, these multi-track master tapes were mixed to 1/4-inch stereo two-channel at 15 IPS analog master tapes. At that time, these tapes were among those assembled onto two sequenced LP master reels which were then used to cut the metal lacquers from which two sides of the original vinyl LPs were ultimately pressed. These same two-channel masters were used for this project. Simply put, the goal was to achieve as accurate and detailed an extraction of the original audio signal as possible.

According to information on Neil Young's website, for the double LP, 30 IPS 'flat' copies were created and assembled from the original analog masters of tracks 1-14, while tracks 15 and 16 were transferred from up-converted 176.4/24 bit digital masters created from the original lower resolution digital originals. The 7" 45rpm bonus disc not available on CD or DVD-A was cut from the original 2 track master tape used to generate the original single." Neil Young: Greatest Hits

Greatest Hits is Neil Young's third compilation album after Decade and Lucky Thirteen. Eleven of the first twelve tracks appear on Decade, and the disc spans his solo career from 1969 through 1992.

How does one represent the career of one of the most distinctive, powerful singer/songwriters of the 20th century in the space of a single CD? By keeping it simple and sticking to the milestones. That's exactly what GREATEST HITS accomplishes, by presenting 16 of Neil Young's most beloved compositions. The gritty, fuzz-guitar fury of Young's work with Crazy Horse ("Cinnamon Girl," "Hey Hey, My My [Into the Black]") brushes up against the acoustic-based, country-tinged "Old Man" and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," as well as haunting, soul-baring ballads such as "The Needle and the Damage Done." Few would deny that the 1970s were Young's richest decade, and this collection strongly focuses on those years, skipping most of Young's genre-hopping '80s albums and grandfather-of-grunge '90s recordings, but the gems from those years would make a rewarding sequel to this concise, sterling anthology.

U.S. charts

The album debuted on Billboard 200 album chart for December 4, 2004 at number 27, with first week sales of approximately 51,000 copies.[1] It remained on the chart for 17 weeks. It was awarded a certified gold record by the RIAA on January 23, 2006.
