Manchester-based saxophonist Nat Birchall has long treated spiritual jazz as a living practice and this record accentuates that focus. Written for a quartet, the music moves with a sense of quiet authority, using unfamiliar modes to gently tilt the emotional ground beneath the listener. 'Red, Gold & Green' carries a ceremonial poise, its Ethiopian scale lending the melody a sense of purpose. 'Amenhotep' unfolds in 5/4 with measured gravity, while 'Menat' slips into stranger harmonic air. What gives the record its pull is restraint allied to belief. The title track shifts modes mid-flow, altering the mood imperceptibly. 'Visitation of the Spirits' and 'Sphesihle' close in a reflective hush, guided by musical intuition.
