Here's a very rare piece of pastic from the hitsville stable, chock-full of motown gems, and one that hardly ever turns up. Released in 1969, on Tamla Motown, in stereo.
Originally a member of the Distants (with Otis Williams, Eldrige Bryant and Melvin Franklyn), Richard Street dropped out before they were joined by the primes (Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams). Otis, Eldrige, Melvin, Eddie and David then changed their name to the Temptations, and when Eldrige left, to be replaced by David Ruffin, the classic line up went on to become huge.
Richard hung around the motown building, contributing hand-claps, background vocals etc. until he formed a new group, consisting of Warren Harris, and Sandra and John Fagin. The Monitors tasted succes with "Greetings (This Is Uncle Sam)", which reached the US top 100, followed by a string of classic tunes, although real success eluded them. They did however, produce this stunning set, which contains "Share A Little Love With Me (Somebody)", "Time Is Passin' By", "Bring Back The Love" amoung others.
Richard Street eventually tasted success, and after occasionaly stepping in for Paul Williams (due to illness) in the Temptations - he became a fully fledged member in 1971. He was also once married to the lead singer of the Velvelettes - Carolyn Gill.
The Lp has a glossy shine, with only the very faintest of surface marks, none of which affect play at all - I've played it this morning (first time in a while as I usually play my worn US copy) and it sounds great. The labels are clean, with just a few very light spindle marks. Grade EX.
The front cover is very clean, with just a couple of very light creases. The back is also clean, and all the seems are intact. There are no stickers, writing, or marks. Grade EX.
The inner sleeve is original.
This LP, which has to be one of motown's rarest, is a great addition to any Motown/Northern Soul collection.
