Description

This is one of the rarest Motown related songs ever.  It’s a song called “Let George Do It” and was written by Motown Founder Berry Gordy and his lifelong friend and early writing partner Billy Davis to support the 1958 campaign of George H. Edwards for his re-election bid for the Michigan House of Representatives.  George was married to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Berry’s sister Esther Gordy Edwards.  Basically, it’s a campaign song…Berry’s way of helping his brother-in-law out.  I remember his sister Esther telling the story once of Berry coming in the room in a panic asking “where is George?…where is George?”.  She told him he was not home and was at church.  He then shouted…”that’s it…thanks”.  She had no idea what that meant, but at the time he was stuck with the lyrics and needed a line.  When she told him George was at church, Berry came up with the line in the song…”George H. Edwards is a church going man”.  The rest is history.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

What makes this so rare is that Berry, then a writer for Jackie Wilson, got Jackie to record the vocal for the song…and boy did he do it in classic Jackie Wilson style.  This record was NEVER intended to be pressed for sale.  It was pressed as 45’s and 78’s with a blank white label in extremely small quantities and was distributed around town to be put in area jukeboxes and clubs to bring awareness to the campaign.   The song started to catch on and become somewhat of a local hit, so being the enterprising man he was, Berry Gordy stamped the remaining copies he had left with a red stamp that read “Let George Do It” on the top with the words “Vocalist-Jackie Wilson” on the side and song credits on the bottom.

Authenticating is not easy for this record.  I know the story but I'm sure thats not enough to technically authenticate it.  I can tell you that I use to work for the gordy family and know the story very well.  I know that only the blank labels and only some of the red stamped ones were pressed by Berry Gordy.  He never did green stamped ones.  Those were booted, but booted back in the day.  In fact, its the "stamps" that give them away as boots as he did not make the record for commercial release or sale.  The stamp was only later put on to make a few bucks off it.  The only way to TRULY proove its legit is by the numbers in the wax which I supply later in this ad.  If you know of another way to authenticate, please let me know.

My record is one of the first ones released with NO STAMP on it.  The record’s label is yellowing with age and there are some surface scratches.  The song is on both sides of the record and both play complete with no skips.  The only marks in the run-off vinyl are these numbers: “H80W 8363-1”…..1/3rd way around the record there is another make that has the capitol letter “I” and another 1/3rd around the record is what looks to be an “A1” or and upside down V with a one.  Can’t make out which.  The record is very uptempo rockish-R&B and features a terrific male group doing backing vocals and a sax break. Not many of these surface…especially with no stamp.  This is truly one of the rarest of the rarest and a jewel in my more than 20 year collection.
