I have a grading scale that I use/borrowed from the Vinyl Factory with slight adjustments. Because in my opinion when purchasing an album or 45 online without visually inspecting in in person most grading scales like Gold Mine?s are just too vague, especially when a record has only been played a few times on quality equipment and handled with great care. Often times sealed records could in fact be mispackaged, warped, scratched, and or flawed in some other way. How can we know for sure it?s mint if it is still sealed. I?ve bought plenty of new albums that don?t track properly, skip, or are warped.
Well cared for records in my opinion need more accuracy in grading between VG+ and NM. Because there are significant differences between a VG+ and NM record. I will throw a plus or minus with records that are graded as EX to indicate if the condition is closer to NM (EX+) or (EX-) which would be better than VG++ but still not quite excellent. I know there is debate over this issue and we?ll likely never all agree. Though I hope this helps?
Vinyl Grading Scale:
Mint (M) ? Absolutely perfect in every way. Never been played and usually sealed. Nothing is truly ?mint?
Near Mint (NM) ? The record has been on a shelf between other records. The vinyl looks glossy and clearly has only been played a few times. There are no marks on the vinyl and the whole package is complete.
Excellent (EX) ? Same but I?d tolerate very light marks where the vinyl has been in and out of the inner sleeve a few times, or tiny signs of use generally. May have a plus or minus if slightly better or worse for wear.
Very Good Plus (VG+) ? A few further faults are acceptable, but nothing that really compromises the record visually or audibly. A little rub, light inaudible marks, a little background crackle.
Very Good (VG) ? It?s seen a bit of life, but is still usable. Light pops and clicks, an edge split, light visible scratches. You can still listen to it and enjoy looking at it, but it is visually and audibly USED.
Good (G) ? To be honest you?re making trouble for yourself here, as Good means Bad. I?d only be selling something really desirable in this condition, with a bargain price and a full, no holds barred description to match.
Poor (P), Fair (F) Attempting to listen will be a disturbing experience. Expect major noise issues, skipping or repeating. The record itself is cracked, badly warped and has deep scratches. The cover is also approaching death.
Please buy with confidence. You may look back at my reviews from past years to see that I have a near flawless history as a seller. All LPs and other merchandise are part of my personal 30 year collection most records are excellent or better. They have been acquired over time for their superior condition, playability, and enjoyment. If by chance there is a notable issue with a disc it will be clearly described in the listing.
