Perhaps Mosaic's most ambitious project, this magnificent set is the first of three volumes documenting the complete jazz recordings of one of the first independent jazz labels. Beginning with a handful of reissue sides that inaugurated the label, this box contains all of the music recorded and released by Commodore, beginning with a January 1938 set by Eddie Condon, and concluding with a Mel Powell session of December 1943. Over the course of the 23 LP's are complete classic recording dates by Eddie Condon (10 sessions), Bud Freeman (4), Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, Chu Berry (2), Willie "The Lion" Smith (2), Jess Stacy (4), Billie Holiday, Stuff Smith, Jelly Roll Morton (2), Art Hodes, Joe Marsala, Joe Bushkin (2), Coleman Hawkins (2), Lee Wiley, Pee Wee Russell, Joe Sullivan, Mel Powell (2), Bunk Johnson, Wild Bill Davison (2), George Brunies, & Edmond Hall. In addition to all the music originally released on 78, there is a tremendous number of unreleased music - alternates takes as well as unissued titles. As we have come to expect from Mosaic, the booklet is loaded with full discographical details, vintage pictures, an interview with founder Milt Gabler, and a session-by-session commentary by Dan Morgenstern. This set was released on vinyl only.
