Mongo Santamaria: Stone Soul (1x LP 180g)
With all the exultation about the reconciliation between the capitalistic USA and the socialistic island state of Cuba, it is easy to oversee that the musical fusion between the two countries took place decades ago. Afro Cuban jazz, in which the interpretation and rhythms of swing and bebop are united with all imaginable rhythms from Brazil and the Caribbean, was label enough to describe a peaceful yet exciting and revolutionary music. At first glance it appears that in his album "Stone Soul" the Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria just took a handful of popular songs from pop and soul and 'translated' them into his own musical language. So far so good: but the enthusiasm and joy with which the band performs is anything but ordinary. Once the threshold for a potent Latin combo has been overcome with meaty winds ("See Saw"), Sonny Fortune on the alto sax storms ahead along rhythm & blues tracks and breaks out with hectic cleft licks on his own headstrong path. Incited by crisp percussion, one can experience how traditional music is combined with a musician’s own ideas to create completely new music. This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid. Der Afro Cuban Jazz, in dem sich die Lesarten und Rhythmen des Swing und Bebop mit allen erdenklichen Rhythmen Brasiliens und der Karibik vereinte, genügte als Etikett für friedfertige, aber aufregend revolutionäre Musikstimmung. Auf den ersten Blick hat der kubanische Perkussionist Mongo Santamaria in seinem Album "Stone Soul" eine Hand voll populärer Tagesnummern aus Pop und Soul in seine musikalische Sprache übersetzt. So weit so gut: doch alles andere als alltäglich ist die enorme Spielfreude, mit der diese Band ans Werk geht: Ist der erste Schwelle für eine potente Latin-Combo mit fetten Bläsersätzen genommen ("See Saw"), spielt sich Sonny Fortune am Altsax soundgewaltig durch Rhythm & Blues-Schneisen und bricht immer wieder mit hektisch zerklüfteten Licks eigenwillige Bahnen. Angespornt von knackiger Perkussion ist zu erleben, wie ein Kollektiv aus der Fülle von tradiertem Material durch eigenes Tun eine gänzlich neue musikalische Wirklichkeit schafft. Diese Speakers Corner Produktion wurde unter Verwendung von analogem Masterband und Mastering 100% rein analog gefertigt.
