Description
You are bidding on a brand new Miles Davis: The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions (September 1968-February 1969) Mosaic Records ltd ed release #1072 out of 3500. The records, booklet and box are brand new MINT condition the cover has a marks on it but nothing serious that's the way I received it out of the box. "Miles seemed to always go for a good mood and feel and he created that atmosphere in the studio that resulted in some of the most interesting and creative music. But the spirit of improvisation always prevailed and Miles and all the musicians' acceptance of each others' offerings always made the music have a warmth and humanity to it." - Chick Corea SOME OF THE BEST MILES YOU ALMOST NEVER HEARD Of all the music in this set, only two tunes, which appeared on "Filles De Kilimanjaro" and the album "In A Silent Way", were issued contemporaneously. Miles Davis was moving so fast that more and more unreleased nuggets were being left in the can. The three-and-a-half hours of music in this set represents only six months (September 1968 to February 1969) of recording. But the major developments in Miles's music during this short period are many. WHEN ONE BRILLIANT PIANIST IS HARDLY ENOUGH The set begins with the new Miles quintet of Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Tony Williams. But by the time of the next session, Herbie Hancock returns to add a second electric piano. A couple of weeks later on the previously unissued "Splashdown", Joe Zawinul's organ makes Davis's triple keyboard palette complete. Davis was moving away from the traditional song forms on which most standards and jazz originals are based and trying to create music with texturally and harmonically rich pieces, which also lend themselves to loose, open-ended forms on which to solo. All but one of the compositions on this set belong to a revitalized Miles or to Joe Zawinul. MAKING TIME STAND STILL Although the rock rhythms that would soon blossom and dominate his "Bitches Brew" era are evident, especially on the two versions of "Directions" with Jack DeJohnette on drums, the overriding aesthetic on this set is a haunting lyricism that seems to makes time stand still. It's the same magic that Miles used to transform a Broadway ballad or Gil Evans-arranged Spanish theme into high art; only the context in which he casts his spells has changed. The pinnacle of this period was "In A Silent Way". It would be Tony Williams' last session with Miles and John McLaughlin's first. It would also give producer Teo Macero a prominent role in the way he reassembled and edited the music to create a new form, sometimes looping and repeating sections. On this set, we have included his issued version as well as the music presented as the musicians actually played it. A final, previously unissued session two days later with Joe Chambers on drums produced "The Ghetto Walk" and a magnificent version of Joe Zawinul's "Early Minor". All of the music on this set with the exception of the originally issued version of "In A Silent Way" has been remixed from the original four-track and eight-track master tapes with great sonic results. Although this was a period of transition for the trumpeter, it is an impressive, satisfying body of work that has had a more lasting influence on the music of today than better known works like "Bitches Brew" and "Jack Johnson". The booklet includes liner notes by composer/producer by Bob Belden and photographs of the period by a variety of photographers. 5 Q-LPs - $90.00 Buyer pays shipping cost.
