MILES DAVIS – CIRCLE IN THE ROUND 2xLP | Columbia KC2 36278 | Gatefold | White Label Promo | 1979
Please note: This is a promotional copy.
Circle in the Round is not a standard Miles Davis compilation. Released in November 1979, it gathers outtakes from Columbia studio sessions spanning fifteen years — October 1955 through January 1970 — nearly all of which had never been released in any form at the time. It is, in effect, a document of Davis working through ideas, pushing the edges of what each of his great bands was capable of, and arriving at recordings that didn't fit neatly into any of his studio albums — but hold up fully on their own.
The four sides cover multiple distinct Davis eras and rosters. Side B is consumed entirely by the 26-minute title track, recorded November 4, 1967. Side D closes with "Guinnevere," an 18-minute exploration from January 27, 1970. The musicians across the sessions include Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Ron Carter, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, and Khalil Balakrishna — essentially the core personnel of Davis's two landmark working bands of the era, alongside his early transitional period players.
Produced by Joe McEwen and Jim Fishel. Mastered at CBS Records Studios, New York on the CBS Discomputer System. Pressed at Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Pitman, NJ.
