This justly famous LP – a near-perfect collector's copy – from Capitol (P 8510, US pressing, rainbow label / Capitol logo at 9 o'clock, mono – no stereo edition exists, original inner sleeve included) entitled “The Magic Bow” features legendary violinist Michael Rabin in a stunning mixed program of favorite short works for violin and orchestra, one originally written for that setting, and the others brilliantly arranged for it.

Throughout Rabin is accompanied by conductor Felix Slatkin and the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, the recordings made in the fine acoustics of Capitol Studios, Hollywood, on 10 and 11 September 1959.

The exact contents are as follows:

Fritz Kreisler: Caprice Viennois Op. 2

Grigoras Dinicu (arr. Jascha Heifetz): Hora Staccato

            Jules Massenet: Meditation, from Thaïs

Pablo de Sarasate: Zigeunerweisen Op. 20

Niccolo Paganini (arr. Fritz Kreisler): Moto Perpetuo in C Major Op. 11

Johann Evangelist Brandl (arr. Fritz Kreisler): The Old Refrain

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: Flight of the Bumblebee, from The Tsar Sultan Suite Op. 57

Camille Saint-Saëns: Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso Op. 28

Easily one of the great violin records of all time, preserved here is truly exalted violin playing, brought off with tremendous elan and personality. Slatkin's accompaniment is perfect graded and the sound is absolutely first rate. Yes, this is the mono version, but it's a near-perfect copy and would be quite hard to improve upon.

Incidentally, there are excellent liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The lovely cover photo is simiarly uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT There is one tiny nick to the lower edge and the barest aging to the rear panel. Really, it appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as outstanding collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
