Description

This picture disc, of Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror, was issued as an uncut promo,12 inch picture disc of the familiar and rare Souvenir Singles picture disc pack MJ5. The Souvenir pack had 5, 8 inch square picture disc singles plus a booklet. For each of the 5 square picture disc's in the set there was a very limited amount of uncut discs made as promos.
This uncut disc that I have pictured, here for bid, is one of those promos. The only difference is that this disc for bid is a miss press, meaning that it has an unknown artist's songs on it(at least unknown to me). The songs on this disc are not Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror", from his 1987 Bad Album like it says it is.
The matrix numbers on this disc areas follows

   Side A;   IQ-SD-1'A'
   Side B;   IQ-SD-1'B'

I have been collecting picture disc records for over 30 years now and have many hundreds of them. I have spoken to and showed this record to a lot of people including used record store owners and employees. The letters "SD" in the matrix would usually stand for "Sample Disc" but not always. When you have someone else's music on a picture disc or any record for that matter it is called a miss press.

In my studies of the making of picture discs, before making a promo disc they will make a few sample discs(for picture discs) or test pressings(for regular records). On a regular test pressing record the label will designate it as so by saying that it is a test press and having the artist name, date, song title and song duration written on it. A Picture disc does not have labels, but sometimes comes with a sleeve with all the info on it..With these sample presses or test presses, usually only between 1 and 15 copy's are made. With picture disc's they are made to check the image alignment and print quality, and may also be shown to the artist and producer(and others) for final approval before the promos and then the final run is cut to the desired shape. Promos are then made to give to friends or V.I.P.'s and also sent to radio stations and sometimes a few to sell to the public.

Sometimes(not always) on the sample disc's, I have read and have been told that the record maker will use some obscure music on them for reasons I do not yet know why for sure. It could be because they do not want to put the artists music(not yet played to the general public as is this music on the "A" side"REMIX" version)on this disc, until the promo stage for fear of the sample discs music getting out to the public before the record is released.- Guns 'N' Rose's anyone. This could be the reason for the damage to both sides of the disc, so that it could not be played in full and or copied. This is still very much debate able though and without concrete proof of this I will not say for certain that this is true.

I  purchased this picture disc from a person from France who said that it was given to him from a friend in the record business. At this time I was also told that there were only 3 of these disc's like this one for each of the 5 separate disc's for the Souvenir pack, all of them not having Michael's music on them. There is no way that I can confirm this for sure but this was the pretense for which I purchased this picture disc, from the person in France

A picture disc is made up of 5 layers. A center layer, and then the art work for each side is put on that and then a then layer on each side for the music grooves. This is why picture disc records do not sound as good as normal record.

THIS PICTURE DISC I HAVE HERE UP FOR BID IS CRACKED ON SIDE "A"(the side WITH OUT the picture of Michael's face, thankfully). SIDE "B" HAS A DEEP SCRATCH IN THE TOP LAYER THAT DOES AFFECT  THE PLAY OF THIS SIDE. IT ALSO HAS OTHER SMALL SCRATCHES AND SCUFF MARKS ON BOTH SIDES. THIS PICTURE DISC WAS NOT INTENDED TO BE PLAYED. IT WAS MORE THAN LIKELY MADE TO LOOK AT FOR A FINAL REVIEW. IT IS HARD TO SEE THE DEEP SCRATCH FROM THE PICTURE. YOU CAN BARELY SEE IT IN PICTURE # 5 UNDER WHERE IT SAYS Co-produced by Michael Jackson IN THE CENTER OF THE PICTURE. I HAVE PLAYED THIS TWICE, ONLY TO MAKE SURE THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE MICHAEL'S MUSIC ON IT.  THIS PICTURE DISC HAS ONLY A GENERIC WHITE OUTER SLEEVE THAT IT CAME WITH WHEN I PURCHASED IT.

THIS PICTURE DISC IS NOT IN MINT CONDITION OR EVEN NEAR MINT CONDITION. IT WOULD BE SENSELESS TO EVEN PUT A GRADE ON THIS RECORD. IT'S VALUE IS IN IT'S RARITY NOT ITS PLAY QUALITY OR IN IT'S ABILITY TO PLAY AT ALL, FOR THAT MATTER. IT IS NOT MY INTENSION TO SELL THIS RECORD TO BE PLAYED. ALL THOUGH YOU ARE ABLE TO PLAY IT ENOUGH, TO HEAR THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE "THE MAN IN THE MIRROR" ON EITHER SIDE, AND THAT IT IS NOT MICHAEL JACKSON.
