From its formation in 1981 until the end of that decade, Metallica released four thrash-metal albums and a handful of EPs that redefined hard rock and heavy metal while establishing the group as the mightiest band on the planet. Elektra is celebrating those early years with the special release of VINYL BOX, a limited edition set combining each of those albums with the legendary, long-out-of-print $5.98 Garage Days Re-Revisited EP and the Creeping Death picture disc, which was previously unavailable in the U.S.

Each of those four albums -- Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets and ...And Justice For All -- have been expanded to 2 LPs with new gatefold jackets. With the exception of the picture disc, all albums have been pressed on 180-gram HQ heavy vinyl, with lacquers cut at Sterling Sound by George Marino.

VINYL BOX begins with the band's debut, 1983's Kill 'Em All, which is seen by many as Metallica's most vicious album. The album includes such classic Metallica tracks as "Hit The Lights," "Seek & Destroy," "Jump In The Fire," and "The Four Horsemen."

Metallica's follow-up album, 1984's Ride The Lighting featured everything from the future stadium anthems "For Whom The Bells Tolls" and "Creeping Death" to the darkly introspective ballad "Fade To Black," a creative shift that both foreshadowed softer songs to come while giving fans a glimpse at the expanse of talent within the band, which featured James Hetfield on guitar and vocals, Lars Ulrich on drums, Kirk Hammett on guitar, and Cliff Burton on bass.

In an effort to promote Ride the Lighting in the U.K., Metallica in 1984 issued "Creeping Death" as a single with two B-sides that found the band covering songs by such new wave of British heavy metal acts Diamond Head (the Metalli-fan fave "Am I Evil?") and Blitzkrieg ("Blitzkrieg").

The band's ascent to superstardom continued in 1986 with Master of Puppets, a collection that was muscular, ultra-heavy and sophisticated all at once. The set features such monstrous Metallica songs as the album-opening "Battery," "The Thing That Should Not Be," "Master of Puppets" and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)." Master of Puppets would prove the swan song for Burton, who was killed during a tragic bus accident on the band's European tour.

The legendary, paint-peeling $5.98 Garage Days Re-Revisited EP found the band once again paying tribute to its influences, including the Misfits/Glenn Danzig ("Last Caress/Green Hell"), Killing Joke "The Wait"), Diamond Head ("Helpless"), Holocaust ("The Small Hours"), and Budgie ("Crash Course In Brain Surgery"). The disc was the unofficial debut of Burton's replacement, Jason Newsted. Out-of-print for years, Metallica revived these songs with the 1998 CD release of Garage Inc., combining them with the covers from the Creeping Death EP and an entire disc of new covers and other B-sides and miscellaneous tracks.

With the release ...And Justice For All in 1988, the members of Metallica became bona fide stars, scoring big with the release of the war-inspired single "One," which was supported by a chilling video (the band's first), which became an MTV hit. The album was a smash and included such brutal metal workouts as "Blackened," "Harvester Of Sorrow," and "The Shortest Straw."
