This is an original copy of an extremely rare and beautiful LP on the legendary Tribe record label out of Detroit. I’m not happy about parting with this LP so I am going to keep my commentary on it to a minimum. Besides, if you are willing to spend what it takes to get this LP, most likely you already know all about it.

Message From The Tribe was recorded in 1972 and 1973.

The vinyl is in decent condition. It has some light marks that do contribute some surface noise throughout (mostly noticeable during the very soft passages). The black and white cover has a number of flaws, but none that significantly mar the beauty of the front cover or obscure the liner notes and pictures on the back cover. There is a split that runs the length of the bottom seam, the spine has been discreetly taped, there is some modest rubwear on both sides, and the back cover has been lightly splattered with a watery rust colored liquid. Here are some details that you might not be able to glean from my tiny photos. The front cover has a picture of a world in the middle of it. In each continent and body of water there is a word or phrase like “air pollution”, “drugs” or “drought. There is a note pinned to this world by a spear. The note reads: “We must unite so we’ll save our children’s children from despair!!” In the lower left corner there is a little collage that includes images (picket line, tank, food co-op, a figure that looks like Che Guevarra, a well-afroed sister, etc.) and words (“Chad”, “imperialism”, “think”).

IMPORTANT:

Phil Ranelin, a beloved fixture in Los Angeles’ Leimert Park community for almost three decades now, is recuperating at home from a five-hour operation in which a surgeon pieced together his knee and lower right leg. They were fractured and broken in several places during a traffic accident.

The operation took place December 2 at Brotman Medical Center in Culver City following the accident, in which Ranelin was broadsided by an 18-year-old apparently drunken driver at the intersection of Normandie Avenue and Third Street. He was released from a rehabilitation center on December 20, 2005.

The jazz veteran was on his way home from a set at Cabrini’s Jazz Alley on Thanksgiving weekend, when the accident occurred. Ranelin just recently returned from a three-date tour in Detroit and Chicago.
